Been planning a road trip...for two months...from South Bend,IN to VA for pick up of a WW1 gun cart that I bought on ebay. Also wanted to pick up a Bridgeport mill,several M3 .50 BMG tripods and ammo from Ironcreations (Jeff) in OH. And a 465 cu. in. diesel engine for my duce from a Steel Soldier member in Cincinnatti,OH. I wanted to do all this with one trip,tow the trailer to Jeff's place,have the engine and mill loaded while I went on to VA. Dropped off trailer at 2PM Mon and left at 4PM. It was 750 mi. to VA and 58 deg. on Tues AM when I picked up the cart and got back on the road by 11:15AM. Did not get rain until I got to #64 in WV and did not start to freeze until I arrived at Jeff's just north of Cinccy. Ice started to coat everything...at 32 deg....but roads were still drivable due to traffic. Rain froze on everything else...windshield, mirrors,etc. Left Jeff's at little after 9PM...after drying out gloves,coat and stocking cap in dryer. Trailer...dual axle's,12K was loaded with about 4.5K with rest of ammo and tripods in truck...Ford 350 Duelly diesel. Went slow at first...making sure all wheel bearings and tires were OK and going 40-50 MPH,checking load and binders every 30-40 mi. until #74. Hit snow-covered roads about 45 mi. SW of Indy about 2AM...speed down to 20-35 MPH with rain still falling but not freezing until N. of Indy. Last 130 mi. N. was a NIGHTMARE...!! Took almost 4 hr. to arrive just S. of South Bend with snow and drifts from 4-6ft. all over. Main roads were snow packed from traffic... secondary roads all drifted shut. Could not get home until 11 and daughter had to come get me at local trucking Co. where I was able to get them to secure the truck/trailer in their fenced-in yard. Roads are now plowed...have to get tire/wheel assembly...no spare...as I blew an inner-rear tire getting stuck in drift. Total time on road without sleep...27 hr. Total miles...1,550. Getting an original WW1 wood gun cart,mill,ammo and tripods in one trip....judge for yourself...LOL. Pics to follow later...it's 4 deg. with -10 wind chill....
