Default Thinking Out-Loud / Possible Way to Lower Ammo Prices?

Not sure about the logistics, legality as it pertains to ammo manufacturers, or the financial feasibility; but here it goes:

What if we (1919 forum members) formed a Ammo Conglomerate. Essentially a corporation made up of a bunch of corporations or small businesses and reloaded, bought, and maybe even manufactured ammo in large quantities for ourselves. Individuals would not even have to form a business to participate, they/we could have others "working" for us as in employees.

My thought is that we set up reloading parties, or individuals reload on their own time for the community (sounds commie I know ). We charge members at cost and maybe make just enough profit to cover additional expenses.

The only sticky point I see is shipping to one-another.

I've seen guys do this in car clubs or to own planes, shared cost and work, but in a quantity that makes it cheap. I guess its sort of a Co-Op like the hippies have with food, only we would be doing ammo.

Like I said just a thought, dont beat me up too bad. As I would say in a meeting; "If you pose a problem, propose a solution."

Default Good idea . . .except . . . ?

Hey 2nd, good idea. However (of course) what about potential liability? I am thinking possible "what if" scenarios? What if there was an accident during re-loading? What about if a member got injured firing a "hot" load, or a misfire with a bullet stuck in a barrel? In today's age, as you know, liability is the name of the game. Everybody HATES lawyers, EXCEPT their own. Any board members have any ideas what insurance might cost us?? Stay safe.

2nd I like the idea but Like Panzer said there would be a liability issue.

You would also become a manufacturer.
Also you would have issues with powder storage.
Shipping would be an issue as well.

The best way to approach it would be as a small group of friends who can do an ammo build party. Every body responsible for there own powder storage and maybe pool your money for brass and components. Then maybe pool your money for a press , case trimmer , case cleaner and then just get together on weekends and reload. Each guy loads his own that way no way to blame anybody if there is squib load or gun blows up. No liability problem
No manufacture for sale problem. No shipping problem .
No storage problem and no way of loosing all the equiptment due to fire of thieft.

But I'd start getting the components now. Worry about the press later.

Default Cheap Ammo

i know how we can do this...one of the posts above is correct..i have been saying this for a year..nobody listened so i just went and bought my mountain...but, i would go for another one. we need to contact an ammo factory..there are enough brains here to make it work...we need to get together on this one, we could actually make this work. i know there is something about a one time import per person, tax free? i don't think there is a size limit..and we have enough friends here to make alot of "one timers" we have the numbers...collectively we have the cash....and we have the need...furthermore...im afraid this is the end of an era...i don't see gas going down..the us dollar going up, nor do i see cheap ammo on the horizon....if for no other reason..why? they are getting what they are asking for it now...so why lower it? i learned this lesson in my lemonade stand as a kid. before it is illegal and we are all just standing around a campfire with a beer scratching our butts...would we all please get together and buy lifetime supplies!?

later

Good idea! We have 1390 active members, and for $360 we could all get 1439 rounds of 308 if a manufacturer would sell 2 million at 25 cents each, about the same rate CMP sells 30-06.

My thought on a massive group buy would be to open it up to other boards too. While the hard-core AK, AR, and FAL guys to name a few dont eat ammo the way those of us enslaved to our belt-feds do, they could likely use a few thousand.

Should we pursue domestic manufacture or import it ourselves?

Do we only want .308? Many here have set up for 8mm, 30-06, 7.62x54 & 7.62.x39(?) Probably for ease of distribution one caliber at a time.

I'm thinking Weaponeer has the experience and infrastructure for an under-taking like this if he is interested???????

Everyone on here wants a deal right?

HEY I posted links a while back for Brand New reloadable Boxer primed 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 ammo from Wideners at .27 cents a round, I guess you all thought that was too much money! They sold out of it 1 week after I picked up 250 packs of it. Here is what some people say "I'm not paying $270 a thousand for brass cased, not when I can buy Wolf ammo for $160 a thousand" LOL As a reloader I laugh when people say that because of what wolf is, unless you buy the $12 a box wolf ammo that is brass cased.

Default there is a time and place for wolf

if you are running an ak 7.62x39 wolf is the way to go. why pay extra for a brass case when its going to get mangled?
maybe im off base here but both my ak's destroy brass. in fact i just shot the saiga today and it crushed the shoulder of the brass so bad the neck was at a 30* angle to the rest of the case.
