Mosin Nagant Help
I've decided its getting close to time to finally buy a Mosin Nagant. But I see there are several varients. Rounds receiver, Hex receiver, I've even seen octagon receiver listed. What should I be looking for when buying one of these?

They are all one in the same. Hex receiver claims to be stronger (than what???) but does look a little nicer. Octagon and Hex are the same. I STRONGLY urge you to to stay away from the M44 or M38 carbines in that they will knock your shoulder into last week. The standard 91/30 is pleasant to shoot and surplus ammo is still readily available. You cant beat an arsenal refurb for around 100 bucks. great weapons and still the best deal out there.

The most important thing to look for is a matching receiver and bolt! That way you know the head space is ok. Otherwise I would suggest the best condition at the cheapest price or the one that you think looks the best! The M44 comes with a bayonet so thats a plus for me.  Hex receivers I think are Tula receivers so may have slightly better machining. I am not really into bolt guns so I say if you want one go cheap so you have more money to buy bigger and better items. I am very happy with my $65 M44 Mosin. If it was worth any more I would sell it! Of course that and my Russian Capture K98 are the only two Bolt guns I have!

I got an all matching M44 for 50 bucks some years way back. It will knock the crap out of your shoulder with silver tip. It will really knock you silly if you put heavy ball thru it... That's all I have been able to find for years around here. Done got used to it....

M44
I have a M44 and it does recoil a bit, but not that bad, just remember to pull her in tight when squeezing one off.
Actually, that may be good advice for life in general.
When sighting M44 in do it with the bayonet extended.
I screwed around most of one morning trying to zero at 50 yards factory setting printed left 6 inches. The only windage adjustment is drifting the front sight.
It then occurred to me that Soviet doctrine required fixed bayonets, even when taking a dump, unfolded bayonet drifted front sight back to witness mark and did much better at 50/100 shooting from a bench using Silver Bear Rooskey ammo.

You guys must have some broke-ass M44's... Mine's a dream to shoot, and recoils on marginally!
I do know that some of the Mosin M44's have crappy chambers that need to be worked over a bit. Mine has to be opened up with a BFH when shooting the silver tip stuff...
Check the chamber out real good when you go to buy!

I've shot a 91/30 and a 91 made in 1914 and the recoil is not unpleasant - about like any other military rifle (SMLE, Springfield, etc.) of the era. However, I've never had an M44, but I suspect that firing it is akin to a Brit "Jungle carbine". Lots of recoil, since you're firing a full load rifle cartridge in a smaller, lighter carbine.
