I hear tell that the recoil on the M44 is tamed pretty well by use of a slip-on recoil pad. The best one appears to be the small sized one called the Sims Limbsaver.

still new to the site, hope everyone doesn't mind if I throw my .02 in
If a cheap fun rifle is what you're shooting for go for a Tula or Ishvesk, Tulas seem to be alittle better.
Check the bore at the muzzle end. heavy use, high tolerence, and steel cleaning rods killed many of them. .310-.312 is Ok for a russian one. Do a "bullet test" if you can't see some of the projectile DON'T BUY IT!
If you want a fun toy to make the highball shooters cry, go for a Finnish capture / rebarrel. You will have to do your homework on these I'm still learning about mine.
Mine = Finnish 91/30, in acutaulity its a New England Westinghose hex receiver, Tikka .308 bore barrel, N.E.W. bolt body, Tula bolt head (both early and late parts), Ishvesk firing pin, Tula (late) rear bolt, Tikka trigger (crisp very little creep), Finn 3200 meter volley sights, ajustable front blade.
I can engage a soda can in combat @ 200 yards.
anyways just my .02

Phuck off!
For those of you who say the M44 'isnt that bad'......bullsheet! The only surplus gun Ive ever fired that kicks harder is a Styer M95......
The M44 is NOT a fun plinking gun. It hammers your ears and rattles your brain. Sure, its cool to do a few times but after about 20 rounds you will wish you had a 91/30.
Like others have said, the Finnish M38 is the pinnacle of Mosin development. I LOVE my Finn M38, it will out shoot me. If you can budget it, buy one.
Also, like others have said......buy one of each, but buy TWO 91/30's.....one for the wall, one to shoot.

Ive got tons of them and lost track where their all from. The last one I bought was from J&G. Every one I have, the bolt starts to get sticky after the first two shots. Other than that all are great. I noticed the tula ones have rough edges around things like the trigger guard that dont matter when it comes to function. I think they were in a hurry to make them and didn't care about the finish work.
