Can anyone tell me what the white discoloration is on new .30 links in cardboard sleeves? I would guess that it is some sort of oxidation but not sure. Can it be removed with a rag? You can see this if you go to ammunitionstore.com and clik on the mag and belts and metal links page, then clik on 30-06.

The "white stuff" is a type of rust preventative for the links to keep them from rusting. I also think it is a dry type lubricant too, but not sure about that.

The first time I use them, I use them as-is. After firing and handling, I apply a light oil and put them in a Zip-Loc type bag for strorage. I have never had any problem with this method.
