When building a 308 is it nessary to install a 30-06 front cartridge stop ?
When installing the belt holding pawl pin & the 308 cartridge stop how tight should that pin go in ?
Should the 308 stop be tight or beable to move a little? Do these need to be fitted ?

With out the 308 stop, the pin goes in easyly and is held with the spring pressure from the belt holding pawl, when the stop is installed the pin does not like to go into the stop but about half way. Thanks for your time

You don't have to have the -06 stop but if your building the gun I would go ahead and install it. The 308 guides don't normally need fitted, the pin should be pretty snug, I think most people use a pair of wire cutters to grab the pin in the groove to tap it out and reverse the process to install it.

30-06 Cartridge Stop

My gun is built and firing but has no 30-06 front cartridge stop. I want to be able to convert to 30-06 in the future, how do you install the front stop so that it will line up with the 7.62 front stop? If I drill the hole, I could really screwup! I want to make sure the 7.62 stop will slide over the 30-06 stop. I am sure it is easy, I just don't want to go drilling a hole that may be a hair off!

No that much should be fine but if you read the stickys in the building section it tells of a sure fire way to mark for a perfect fit using a cut off transfer punch. I used a simular method with a bit of paint on the end of the 06 stop.

30-06 stop dimensions

Does anybody have the correct dimensions for the 30-06 stop ?

I turned one out on the lath thats looks right and fits the 308 stop but I'd rather have the correct size, the length and dia. as it it protrudes from side plate. Thanks for your time.

I did exactly what blkbd did. Just put a dab of paint or white out on the end of the '06 stop and stick it into the .308 front feed guide. Then put the .308 guide into place and press it against the RSP. Center punch the paint spot, drill the hole, and chamfer the outside. Finally, use the .308 guide as a makeshift anvil and mash the '06 cart stop and grind smooth. This method worked perfect for me.

The correct length for the 30-06 stop is: .630 from the inside of the RSP. Overall length is shown at .900 with the 3/16 rivet shaft included, but you can adjust that length to suit you. Diameter is 5/16".

Here is a simple and sure way to install this. Get the cheap transfer punch set from Harbor Freight and sacrifice this one punch to the cause! After marking, drilling and chamfering the hole, use about a 1/4" section of the same, or slightly smaller punch and insert it in the 308 spacer. When installed over the 30-06 stop, the 308 spacer will protrude that 1/4" out from the pawl bracket, giving you a solid bucking tool to rest the receiver on while hammering the 30-06 stop's rivet end flat. Then grind flush! Be sure to remove that 1/4 inch of bucking filler so your 308 spacer will fit normally!
