So I bouhgt a 1919 kit from OOW just before they ran out. I just recently got a plate and all of the other parts for the build. Today I was dry fitting everything and I couldn't get the trunion to go flush with the left side plate. Apparantly, something happened allong the way to smoosh the rail on the bottom of the trunion where it meets the side plate. I then moved on to the barrel shroud. For the life of me I can't get that thing off. So all I can think to do is to file downthe sides of the rail so they fit. Any ideas on how to get the barrel shroud.

your barrel shroud is probably silver soldered on. put the trunion in a vice with shroud pointing straight up. heat the base of the shroud with a torch while another person applies constant pressure to the shroud trying to twist it off. keep heating it until the shroud is off. then clean off the solder.

if you mean that there is a squared tab that is supposed to slide in the groove int he side plate, but that the squared tab is smooshed a little, take a file to it to straighten it out a bit a little at a time. until it slides tightly in the groove.

does this make sense or am i answering the wrong ting?

I think you got it, Rory. It is not unusual to have at least a few burrs, and sometimes a slight munching of some the the trunnion mating surfaces. A little cleanup with a file should be all that is required, unless it is an extreme case.

On shroud removal, be sure to use a bar of about 1/2" in diameter through the shroud to give you good leverage. Some are very tight and need heat even if not soldered, but you may indeed have a soldered one. And don't squash the trunnion in the vise. It is possible to do that if not careful.

well I gave it all I could give it tonight to no avail. Shroud 1 me 0.

I can't figure out why anyone would do it, but it looks like someone was beating on the trunion with a hammer or something else and caught the rail that slides into the left side plate, compressing it. There is a rounded indention that seems to have been made by a hammer.

I'll get back at it tomorrow and maybe even post some pics.
