I have a line on some really nice transit chests for water cooled guns and would like to see how many people would be interested in participating in a group buy to see what kind of price break could be had for 5-10 boxes. These are designed by me and manufactured by a cabinet maker buddy of mine. The boxes are made to hold both the Browning 1917a1 and the Colt Commercial 1928, along with the wooden ammo box, steam chest, tools and accessories. As there are minor dimensional differences between the 1917a1 and 1928 steam chests, anyone wanting a 1928 box would need to specify. These boxes are well made out of solid wood with cabinet grade birch playwood ends and clear coated inside to protect the wood from oil stains. Contact points with the gun are lined with felt. These are cabinet grade and not shipping crate grade, so they run a bit more. Each will have locking hardware. They are painted, and will include the flaming bomb stencil if requested. I am working on an Argentine crest stencil for the Colt 1928 boxes, so hopefully I can offer that as a no-cost option.

The initial boxes were somewhat expensive to manufacture, but I'm working on getting a price in the $275 range based on a bulk run. Shipping is not included, but I will only charge actual shipping cost plus a nominal amount for the shipping box and tape.

Payment will be due when the boxes are ready for shipment. I will stick my neck out and front the cost, so your word is your bond. Please don't make me hunt you down and keeeel you if you commit and fail to follow through. :D

As soon as I know how many people are interested, I can get a firm price.

What a great looking case. Have you (or any other of you gun nuts) given any thought to offering a quality case for just the gun? At 70 years old I do not need a bunch of extra stuff in the box to add to the weight. Prehaps an additional case for the ammo boxes and spare parts?? Just a thought. LWC

That looks really good. Is the case long enough and deep enough to accommodate a Crankfire also?

Excellent question! Lou's crank appears to be no problem, but the 3-4" of side clearance needed for Emory's Crankfire just isn't there. A quick-detach system for the crank handle would fix that issue. In the meantime, I just carry the crank in the box in one of the cubbys.

The 1919 box system that I am also working on will have clearance for cranks and spades.

That's a good point! When loaded these boxes are just barely in the carryable range for me. I'm 53, but I still have my frame carpenter's physique. I managed to jerk and press my loaded 1917 box onto the chest-high shelf on one of my inventory racks and I darn near pulled something in the process.

I have made smaller transit cases out of left over Wise Lite shipping boxes that hold just the gun, pintle and T&E. We could consider making something like that if there was enough interest. Same goes for accessory boxes.

Still working on getting that price together. My cabinet shop buddy had to have an emergency quad bypass last week. I should have something firm this week and can take reservations for those who want one.

Transit Boxes are Now Available

Looks like we are back on track in the shop and ready to accept reservations for either the 1917a1 or Colt 1928 transit chests. I have come up with some decent stencils which I can add for free. As mentioned before, these are far better than the originals and higher quality construction than most home-made boxes. Initial price is $275 each plus actual shipping cost. e-mail me or PM me with your reservation.

Yeah, to me that makes sense. As cool as the one you have is, I am more inclined to bring the gun to the range without all the cool accessories, or to pack them separately. The complete historical accessories are great for display, but I would rarely use them for general range time. A case for just the water cooled gun, with maybe room for little things like the hose, would certainly make sense for me. :) My friend LWC has a few years on me, but I still hate carrying heavy boxes, lol!
