Hey guys, I just brought home a parts gun 1884 trapdoor. The breechblock is marked 1884, but the firing pin has no spring. I ordered a replacement however it does not fit. Ive read that in later models the spring was omitted, how can I tell if mine is supposed to have the spring or not?

I have owned several 45-70 Trap Door Springfield and have never had one with a firing pin spring. I am not sure any were ever made with one. Nor have I ever found a parts list from a gun parts company that included one. There is very little reason for one in this type of weapon. Some firing pins for the trap door Springfield were brass and some were steel. That's about the only variation I have seen.

firing pin spring

The firing pin spring was dropped from use after around serial #85,000 which was around 1878 according to my book. The bronze firing pin was the last firing pin variation and may be found in later trapdoors or ones that went back through the armory for repairs. If you need any other info on the trapdoor, or how to tell if it is correct, just shoot me an e-mail. I hope this info helps you out.

Firing Pin Spring

My Trapdoor is a 1874 S/N and has no firing pin spring. I load ammo with a Lee loader and my own cast bullets, they are a real attraction at the range! Never forget General Custers last words, "Damn, I Ain't Ever Seen This Many Indians".
