Anybody here own a 95-2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup?
If so Toyota is going to buy it back at 1.5X it Blue Book value! Mine should bring around 11,500 from them, 97 w 220,000 miles.

The frames are made of poor quality steel and are rusting, and in some cases failing. I know this because I just got a recall notice on my 97 that I bought new. It turned 220,000 miles yesterday and I checked the frame and it has a softball sized hole on the inside rear rail at the spring shackle mount.

Well, ****.... I was planning on driving this for a few more years, now it looks like I'm going to have to deal with a payment that I hadn't planned on.
That's definitely going to cut into my fun/gun stuff funds.

If any of you guys have one be cautious about taking it into the dealership for inspection. If it's found to be defective it sounds like they basically declare it unsafe and take it, put you into a rental car at their expense and Toyota sends you a check. I'm going to get my ducks in a row prior to taking it to the dealership, I'd like to see somebody tell me I can't drive my truck away, that, would be interesting.

If you have one here's a Tacoma forum with more info.

This is what hapens when the frame rusts too much. We had this truck in the auction that I work at and one of the dealers was backing up in 4 wheel drive and it just folded up. At the Toyota dealiership, the company I work for owns, there has been 50-60 Tacomas out back waiting to get crushed. It's sad to see because they still run good and there are many good parts left on them that could be used. Some of them the frames could be repaired but they are all going to be crushed.

my best friend has one of these and thye wouldnt just "give him the cash" for it...

they want to give you the amount towards a new toyota.

so if your in the market for a new one your in good shape, but if not your not gonna gain much out of it.

Wow, I've never seen a 'Taco" do that. You say that's common? It's not just an odd occurance?

yeah i would think to strip the holy hell outta them before they get crushed, if only the frame is defective there is a bit of money to be made off the parts, especially if the engine/computer remains intact.

Sounds to me like your friend was taken to the cleaners by the dealership.

I've got a 1988 4 wheel with 226,000 miles and a 2004 4 wheel with 7900 miles and they both are fine. Of course, they don't put salt on the roads here in Florida. The day the dealer tried to take either of my trucks and crush them would be a bad day for them. I would rather take the truck and part it out than just destroy it; more money for me that way. Now Toyota has another black mark against them to go along with their sales staff.

I checked out the site and now I see why the dealers are impounding some of the trucks. I would still hate to lose either of my trucks

Crush or disable "your" vehicle in the back lot then tell you that you MUST buy a new one? Man, sounds like openng scene from National Lampoon's Vacation.

That truck is humped up like a cat taking a dump! :D This is the first news I've heard of Tacoma fiasco, downright dangerous for anyone who drives one or meets one on the road, the SNAFU doesn't surprise me, all the BIG auto companies going to crapper while trying to save a buck.

Too bad GM would never step up to the plate on inferior steel. I've seen cars and trucks less than a year old with rotted out brake rotors. And what is up with all the rotten rear backing plates on the trucks and SUVs?

I've seen a few Tacomas get scrapped because of rotten frames. I wonder if those former customers will have any recourse.

his passed inspection (no frame rust). so they offered him the recall money as his "trade in": but not for just walking away and giving them the truck back.

since his truck is paid off he said he wasnt gonna give it up for $9k and have to make payments again...

funny thing is they want to devalue your truck as a trade in now because of that recall. lmao

Depending on the level of damage Toyota has the option of repairing it or buying it back. What you do with the money is pretty much up to you.
