I'm probably going to need to buy something economical on gas and I've always liked PT's. Anyone got a 4 cyl model that can tell me what the TRUE gas mileage is???

Lobo i don't have a PT ,But i got rid of the gas cow F250 ,and got a new Ranger .I went with a 4 cyl Stick ,and it is peppie ,and i am getting 28 .
But in high wind I'm lucky to be able to stay in 5th. Or going up hills ,the guys with the little V6 have more power and get about the same gas mileage .

That's pretty good gas mileage for a P/U. My old Tahoe is getting 16, but I'll keep her.

Maybe its the Make ,and the gear ratios .I'm can tell the engine is a Mazda.
16 valve ,and its fast ,but it just doesn't have much torque . But the V6 in them is just two more cylinders, and Maybe it isn't working as hard ?

My advise would be to rent one for a week or two before you buy it. Gas mpg is one thing, but visability, room, ect are other issues that really don't come to light until you put it thru normal use/commute time.

I can't answer the mpg question but both the fours and sixes are rather doggy. I'm basing this on the ones that come into our shop.
My little sister has a Mini S and has been getting 40+ mpg consistently for a year now. My oldest sister has signed up for a Smart car. ( From what I've read a real piece of crap. Rather weak mpg, shifting makes you want to puke, poor cornering despite stab control, engine sounds like it's being thrashed at highway speeds.) I can't talk sense into her.
My '67 linc conti convert gets about 6-12 mpg! OUCHMAN!
I will be putting an OD tranny in the five ton Gun Truck by this fall. Diesel is killing me. It's going to be cheaper to ship it by truck to an event in Tennessee from NJ than to drive it.

Is the Mini S the same as a Mini Cooper??

Renting one is a good idea.

I love American, but I hear the Toyota Corrola is a pretty good car and great on gas.

I just looked around and those Corrola's are like $18k...too much.

lobo the pt cruisers are maybe the worst car i have ever driven. your knee keeps banging in to the center i hate that car with a passion.

the mini cooper is a great car. drive one before you make any decisions. they are easily getting over 40 mpg in the sport model!!!

i have a honda fit. honestly i love it. lots of room for being such a small car. i am getting low 30s for the actual fuel economy. i had the 07 for sport and now have the 08 fit sport. i would have kept the last one but the dealership had a lackey really mess up and messed up the drain plug and it fell out while i was driving and needless to say i did some damage to the engine and they replaced the car for me :)

i am 6'2" 225 with size 14-15 feet and i fit very well int the car. it has transported a few thousand rounds of ammo, an m2hb, a few 1919s really the car is great stuff.

i have also had a couple recent civics. big fan of them too!!

if i had any choice and price was of no concern i would probably go with the cooper but the fit sport is right at the mid 16s low 17k it will last as long as i want it to. my dad just bought one a couple days ago. this is his first foreign car. he thinks that it is great too.

Lobo,

Go to some nice used car lots, or rent one for 1/2 day, have fun and take notes.

Go ahead and laugh fellas, I drive a 2000 Buick Regal GSE, former "grandma" car that's fully loaded/100K miles/gets 26 MPG average on backroads to work. When it comes to passing gear time, bring in the supercharger and hang on, people going "WTF is THAT?!!" and jaws drop. :D

We had a PT Cruzer in NM when we went to see DTG in his last weeks. It looked cool but didn't get the greatest MPG. Renting is a good option to see if you like it. The Corolla gets one MPG less than the ECHOs we have, which appear to be smaller from the outside, but are as large or larger on the inside. The ECHOs also start at less than $12,000 for a 4-door with stick, air and radio -- and what more does one "need?" As for reliability -- aside from new rear wheel bearing from heavy loads in the back such as too much ammo and guns, NO repairs at all -- well, new sparkplugs at 70,000 miles!

Carry On!

pt

As a former Repo man, who has driven just about everything you can imagine, I would recommend against a PT cruiser, every one I drove I was not impressed with and they all had real junky interior that was falling apart... everyone is right about Honda being great cars.... I had a freind once say, Id rather drive rice and feel nice, then drive another and think twice :D

Lobo,
We, my girlfriend and I, went with the Honda Civic 4 door. I get the X-plan price on Fords and a new Focus was a lot less money. It was also a lot less car with less MPG. The real clincher was how much more safety was bulit into the Honda.
She drives the worst highway around for accidents and where she would likely live after a hit in the Ford, she would likely walk away from the Honda.
Like others have said, go rent a few. Car rental is cheap "insurance".Your spending a fair amount of money so you should be really happy whith what ya got and not what ya should have got. Not only that but the little Civic, even with the auto trans, is fun on the twisties.:)

Honda

Yah, I am a firm believer that pretty much everything honda makes is a good quality long lasting item, I had a Honda CBR900RR that I abused the heck out of, I cant tell you how many times I wrecked and slammed that bike to the asphalt... " I used to be a stunt rider" :D But of all the abuse I put that thing through it never skipped a beat... I had it for 3 years and only changed the oil once... although one time i wrecked and all the oil leaked out of the side case cover that was cracked..... but my point is, through all that, my honda and all the others that rode with me in the same abusive way that had hondas never had a problem... but I saw many yamahas and suzukis with blown motors and thrown rods, and broken crank shafts... but the hondas are TANKS
