Hey Guys,

I got myself a nice Ruger New Vaquero. I would like to load at as close to the original Black powder load as possible.

I am thinking of using IMR Trail Boss Powder as it looks good and adds a good measure of safety!

That being said, I am looking for a Round, flat nose, lead bullet. I am not target shooting but I do want a good bullet that does not break the bank. I want a 255 or 250 gr bullets like they would have used back in the day. Anyone know the best place to buy these and anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have reloaded a lot for the 45 long Colt in the past, but I must admit never to the black powder spects. As far as the bullets go your best bet is to cast your own bullets. It is very easy as well as inexpensive if you have access to lead. I found that wheel weights worked best for me.

I used Unique for my loads, and bought 255 gr SWC's from a local caster at a gun show. He's gone now unfortunately, but I'm sure it was an H&G design.

Maybe go over to:

They know a lot more about cast boolits, and I think there are a few people that do casting and sell there. One guy is up in Alaska (Bullshop) and ships in Priority Flat Rate Boxes. He'll probably even sell you an assortment to try out. Dont' know the current delivery time, as he does custom casting too.

I have a long colt and cast with lee molds. I use wheel weights as that is what is around. Get a tumble lube design and you do not have to size in most cases. The mold and a small lead pot will pay for itself very quickly.

Thanks for the info guys!

A few more questions.
Whats Moly coating?

If I make bullets myself, don't I have to lube them? If so how do I do that?

Do I want a 452 or a 454 Dia bullet? I want something like they would have had back in the day...

I think a 250 or a 255 gr bullet will be fine as long as its one of those round Flat nose cowboy style bullets.
