Someone(they said that was what they used) gave me o-ring (the actual parts numbers)sizes which I bought but never tried yet. I have to wait till the weather warms up to try it. The first time I used Lobo's teflon tape idea from Ace with bearing grease which worked fine.

BigBlock,

There have been a lot of guys with different Ideas on packing. For the most part I think every one of them have been made to work..Pick one you like or fits with whats availible to you and experiment with it till its the way you want it. I wouldn't get to concerned about makeing it absolutly drip prof. One guy I talked to at a shoot said " As long as its leaking you know you've got water in it;) "...Lou

I have jpg scans of the SAR article covering the O-rings. It has the part numbers from McMaster-Carr, as well as the mods to the barrel required. Anyone who wants that, just e-mail me through the board here and I'll send you the 2 images.

I've used O-rings on my 1928 without modifying the barrel and they seem to work fine just need to coat them with grease so they can slide easily. I don't remember the sizes off hand I just took the barrel and muzzle gland with when I picked them out. I ended up stacking four in front and two in the groove in the barrel to fill the gaps.

Been using o rings in my 08 maxim for years. works really good. only packing that doesn't leak. Some experimenting with finding the right size is needed. I found that removing the knurling at the bottom of the grove helps. I run two o-rings with a split spacer made out of aluminum between them. some high temp. lithium grease always helps. The key is finding the right fit not to tight not to loss. I can usually get 4,000 to 5,000 + rounds out of a set of rings. Good luck

I remember seeing it a while ago but now I can't find it.
This is the April 2000 issue, Vol. 3 No. 7. I now have it in pdf form as one document, thanks to tanbo77. I do NOT want to post the article on the web, as it is property of SAR. However, I can e-mail it to anyone who needs it. If anyone has that issue, it would be nice to try and get a slightly cleaner scan copy than what I have. It's perfectly readable though. I got it from someone on this board, just can't remember who. Anyway, scanning technology is much better now.

Lots of guys use O rings successfully and there is nothing wrong with them. I'm old school and take pride in wrapping my barrels cuz it's kind of an art. I use the teflon tape and even after removing the barrel and cleaning it the tape is still intact in the rear groove so I just slap some grease on it and I'm ready for the next shoot. I do re-wrap the front each time.

NAPA, high speed wheel bearing grease is my lube of choice, but any good quality one will work just fine. If you're shooting up nawth right now when it's cold you might want to use motor oil cuz the grease can make the action a bit stiff when it's really cold...down here in Florida we can use the heavy stuff all year round.
