Job is open until Feb 18. http://www.atf.gov/jobs/index.htm

Listed under "Office of Field Operations" - "Industry Operations Investigator"

Step up to the plate - make a difference - be more than just an internet complainer. The government is an animal that feeds on what it is given - no gun people in the pack? They'll hire whoever else is.

If not interested, pass on the info to someone who might be. Questions? Post here or shoot a PM.

what do they pay to sell your soul???
This particular announcement starts @ GS-9 (roughly mid 40s depending on location). Journeyman is GS-12 w/possibility of 13. Full salary info with locality definitions and rates can be found @ http://www.opm.gov/oca/08tables/

Soul transfer is optional. One thing that is assured: unless good people step up, nothing changes. Complaining on the internet has a 100% failure record which I predict will continue indefinitely.

One of the shortcomings I believe is present in gun owners as well as American society in general is the tendency for 95% to ride in the cart and complain about the slow speed at which the 5% pulls it.

I was wondering if you'd flame me for outing this, but realistically, it won't hurt your chances. With your background you will be a standout.

The guy I know who got hired there went into his interview holding a FFL and SOT, life NRA member, and said he didn't like some of the gun laws on the books. Maybe he just fell through the cracks or it could be that a legitimate effort to find qualified people who look at it as more than "just a job" comes along once in a while. I have also come in contact with others who hold similar views. Seems like if we could stack the deck a bit, years down the road we could see a shift. It definitely won't be an instant gratification exercise, but IMO worth trying for the next generation.... maybe even our retirement. Not to mention getting paid to count guns can't be a bad way to earn a living. :D

Don't think he was serious about the flaming part....He had given Frank and I some info for applying and getting hired. I think he's just kidding about the flame comment.

Frank and Alamo,

I'm proud of you guys, best of luck, I know you'll do the right thing.

Sean,

You really should check into this, could be a job in your area, word has it there might be one in my area within a couple of yrs, for now I'll just have to be happy riding shotgun with the veteran LEOs. ;)

LR is right, get PRO-GUN people into ATF ranks and hire more of the same, lots of them retiring and you DO NOT want overzealous JBTs taking their place, might turn the tide in 10 yrs or so. The best agencies are reformed from WITHIN, without an influx of decent folks, ATF will just play the same BS games, or worse.

P.S. IMHO, you only sell your soul when you refuse to do nothing.

Geesh can't anyone take a joke any more :D

Yeah, it was directed at Frankie boy for "chewing" on me for posting it. I didn't intend to bust your chubbs, SDK, sorry it came across that way. My advice is go ahead and apply - some people stay home, some move. Good thing is unless something changed, if you get an offer you will know up front what geography it is for and you can take it or leave it - no dice rolling. I had tried to put a bug in a couple of board members peanuts a while back, then lo and behold the job opens.

I'd love to see gunscrews lining up for these jobs. It couldn't hurt the industry... maybe even help a bit here and there.

nah LR... you didnt bust my chubbs. its all good.

but now days every body is so touchy...any joke can be taken wrong.

theres a new song out there that hits it right on the head... id tell you about it but that would be a hijack. LMAO

back to the topic:

Blackrifles: will give the link a shot, but i cant retire from my current field for another 9 years.

may be a great "next occupation" as they are trying to make it where no one can retire on their main occupation.

Isn't the ATF the branch no other gubment entity wants? Saw an article a few months back that said the government was trying to fold the ATF into other agencies but noone would touch it. Seems they always inherit the crap jobs nobody else wants. Guess there is a couple good job perks tho. Every gun owner will call you a jack booted thug behind your back. And you get endless entertainment by being able to play with all the siezed exotic weapons you come in contact.

FAL freek,

Decades ago there was some talk of incorping ATF into agencies like FBI, never worked out, I knew several FBI agents, they didn't like ATF (at all) during early 90's. I must say in the last 10 yrs, I haven't met an ATF agent I didn't like, even our local S/A is guilty of being a certified "gun nut" and that's putting it mildly, LOL!!

Former (worthless) NFA examiners and FTB idiots, I can't say I miss them, they put a LOT of good people through sheer hell, and I hope they get what's coming to them. I've heard nothing but good things on new NFA examiners, word has it FTB is getting "overhauled" now, with people who LIKE firearms and fully understand how they work, wished they'd done this to begin with, common sense comes through.

Hey now, we only JOKE about some of our guys being JBTs, but they're some of the finest human beings you'll ever meet, with any luck, we'll send the REAL JBTs looking for a job, I heard Wally World's always looking for experienced door Nazis. :D

Playing with confiscated weapons, I'm sure that happens, what I hate to see is desired/collectable firearms chucked into a smelter, this is STUPIDITY in my opinion. Some of those firearms need to be donated to museums or PDs, save the taxpayers some money and preserve history. Highly-desireable parts melted? The sales of those parts could put some money back into ATF, again saving tax money, instead of putting forth an ANTI-GUN stance, that's exactly what I've seen in the past.

Frank, downside is that if you or I got hired, the hired one wold have to step away from the FFL and SOT. ...Ranger told me that's a no no and they won't allow it. So my good friend...I make this solemn promise to you, if you get hired and I don't....I will keep all the toys .....your welcome to come "inspect" me at your leisure....:p

Well... I AM in need of a job, and I meet the education requirement (even worked for the Gubbermint back in 1990, at the FAA center in ATL). Only thing is, do you really think they'd hire any of us from the "gun nut" community? I could do the job fairly. But I do wonder if they'd let ANY of us- myself included- in the front door? After all, we ARE kind of known for being, shall we say, a "wee bit critical" of some of the agency's excesses. ;)

Think it would be worth the application?
