this weapon that auto ordanance has remanufactured is a disgrace to thompson. I fired my 1927 a-1 tommy gun one time and the supressor flew off along with the rear sight. I e-mailed them with a warrenty issue and they never responded. I will not buy anthing else from them!!!

Yea, I looked at one a while back made by Khar. Kinda rough, a sanding and reblue might help the looks a bit. Not to brag but my dummy guns look a little realer:rolleyes: I have tried to e-mail them about some parts and they didn't resond either so even if I wanted a new semi I wouldn't buy from them! Are you talking about the compensator and front sight? Although the rear sight is known to fall off also.

The new Auto Ord tommys are being made by Kahr Arms, and the quality is terrible. I bought one in 2005 and it was more of a "kit" gun, as in Kahr builds the gun and it is up to the owner to actually make the blessed thing work.

I tore mine down and polished, tweaked, and cussed till it is reasonably reliable. I will never buy another thing from Kahr however....

No SH*T!!!

I helped a friend with a tax-paid SBR on a semi M1. The front sight was friction-fit. No pin. Niiiiiiiiiice. The '27s are the same way(that Ive seen), no sight dowel. All you need to do is put the reciever and barrel in a mill vice, indicate the front sight, drill a .119 hole thru sight base with a .119 center cutting carbide end mill, making sure 1/3 of the hole is barrel, ream with .003 taper .124 reamer, and install drift! Voila! proper sight fix. Or tig weld it. Frazer42

There is a semi-auto being worked on right now which will allow you to make a semi from one of the M1928A1 kits and later one of the M1 kits. At least you'll have an option to the Kahr in a few months.

Here is a photo of one of the prototype receivers before the ejector port and some other details had been machined.

If you're going to buy one, be sure to find an older one marked "West Hurley" on it. These are much better than the Kahr arms crap. That's what I used as the base gun when I built my SBR 1928 lookalike. Now, with the new one that Orin is talking about, THAT would be a far better option. If you don't mind waiting a bit longer, that is.

tommy gun

I bought one of these last winter, after a couple of clips I realized the rear sight was falling off,one screw completely fell out before I noticed it, I went to Kahr's site and tried to find replacement screws but couldn't so I wrote their customer service department, they emailed me back the next day and told me to send them my address, with in a week I had 6 new screws and a small tube of lock tite, since the sight was loose I took it off to clean the oil out of the holes, once I got that far I went ahead and sanded the top receiver down and polished it, then cold blued it, it's still not the same as a real Thompson but it looks alot better, I also built a longer horizontal foregrip so it doesn't look like the barrel is a mile long. With good mags it fires perfectly, the drum never works well, but it looks really cool. Bob.

I hope the wait will not drag out for an awful long time but having to send the prototype to ATF will probably add a couple of months or more to the date when they are ready for the public.

We are really on a "fast track" trying to get it up to ATF in 2 to 3 weeks.

One thing that really helped was that I was able to get an almost complete set of full size drawings for the 21/28/M1/M1A1 and I haven't had to resort to any "reverse engineering" of the original parts.

What is the story on those semi auto receivers?

I have been hearing rumors on other boards about these? Still, and SBR is an SBR. Who is going to release these?

Rapid Fire pending ATF approval - Yes, a SBR is an SBR and some folks will want to go that way but there is always the option of a 16" barrel for those that don't want a SBR.

Is this going to be an open bolt or a closed one? I know the ATF has been picky about open bolts semis for a LONG time, but there are some MACs out there that are legal open bolt semis, right? Just wondering how much of a 1928 parts kit will adapt to these, and how much has to be changed to build one as a legal semi. Unless, of course, the SC ruling affects the MG ban eventually too- then talk about a market for replacement Thompson receivers! I know some people are worried about the insane prices for FA stuff dropping IF the ban is reversed, but I still think there would be a LOT of money out there for the dealers and manufacturers just in making replacement receivers to legally build all these cut-up parts kits.
