Barrel identification

Can anyone tell me how to positively identify a barrel? I have, what was sold to me years ago, a new 1919a4 barrel that is supposedly a 30.06.

Yes, get a .308 round, an 8mm round and a 30.06 round and see which one fits in the chamber.;)

Only the correct round will fit, none of them will swallow the others.

Won't a .308 fit in the chamber of a 30.06?

308 will fit in both 30.06 and 8mm but with process of elimination you should be about to determine what is what.

No, the taper and diameter of them is different. The bullet caliber between the 8mm and the .308 and 30.06 is different and would preclude it from entering the throat of the chamber, and the length to the shoulders of all of them are different.

None of those three rounds will fit in either of the other two.

No it will not. Pull out your ammo and a mic and measure.
them.

The diameter of the .308 at just below the shoulder is much wider than the 8mm.

Been through this before with photos of the actual rounds in the barrels but cannot find the pictures I took.

30.06 is too long for a .308 chamber
30.06 is too wide at the shoulder for an 8mm chamber and has a different taper.
8mm is the wrong bullet diameter for either 30.06 or .308 and will not fit in the throat of either one.
.308 chamber is much too short for either 30.06 or 8mm.

308 should fall inside the 30.06 and 8mm. It won't fit correctly but it will go inside the chamber. So process of elimination should tell you what it is. Correct?

No, incorrect.

Different tapers, different shoulder widths, different caliber between 8mm and .308 or 30.06 and different lengths.

I found a couple of my pictures.

Household hardware Gas Cylinder Auto part Liquid
Household hardware Gas Nickel Auto part Metal

The first pic is .308 in the 8mm chamber......NO GO

The second pic is 8mm in 8mm chamber......GO

Third pic is 30.06 in 8mm chamber.........NO GO.

No need for a pic of an 8mm in either 30.06 or .308 chambers because the 8mm is much longer than the .308 and the 8mm bullet wouldn't enter the throat of either one of them.
