I've got a super nice amd kit and am stuck between buying or bending a receiver.

Does anyone have a place you can buy a standard ak receiver with the holes pre-drilled?

Or would sombody be willing to rent a bending jig to me.

I recently built a Polish under folder on an Armory USA 1.6mm receiver I purchased a few years ago. Two holes didn't lineup so I had to have the holes welded shut and redrilled. Armory no longer makes/sells receivers. While the gun functions well and looks OK, I wish I had sold the receiver and bought an Nodak. Live and learn.

I agree that NoDakSpud makes a great receiver.

If you want a really nice 80% receiver I recommend 'Cold Steel Solutions". You can get these with the dimples for the holes already punched and they are very very robust. Thick steel. You may want to get the rails elsewhere, such as K-var or something simply because Cold Steels rails are unfinished. I like it this way as I can fit them exact.

I have not bent a receiver, nor do I ever intend to. I have seen it done and by the time I would get it right I could build an 80%. You will need a special bending die, a press and tons of patience to bend it. Unless you are making a bunch of these, I would get one already pre bent.

Stay away from the cheapo "bend it yourself" receivers as they are not very good.

I agree if your doing just one then buy a rec but if you enjoy metal working I would in no way discourage you from bending a flat . AKParts has some very nice qaulity flats and tooling and its not that hard to do. You would need a flat bending jig , press and a spot welder to place the rails.
As far a prebent rec blanks I would do the research on any of the companies reccomended, just search ak files , gunco , weaponeer etc .

This fellow makes some beautiful blanks http://www.bent-metal.com/

Nodak spud was the first receiver I built on. Then I got a ORF receiver for my next build. It cost $40 and was for a underfolder...all we wanted to do was use it for a RPK so we tig welded patches in the back. It all works just fine its an AK-47 they are not finiky but the NODAK seems to be slightly more solid

+1 on the NodakSpud AMD receiver! I had one for my AMD-65 project, and also used one of their XM16E1 AR lowers for my M16 retro build. GREAT quality parts and great guys to deal with. :D

I’m going to throw Childers into the mix. You can custom order the serial number to match the kit numbers. Fully heat treated. You can even add other markings on them if you want. All my kit builds match now.

I built several on Nodaks but for the past couple of years I have used Childers exclusively. Great receivers, nice people to do business with, and you can them with selector stops or without, engraved with various country’s markings, trigger humps, drilled for trunnions, not drilled, and custom serial numbers. They are more than a Nodak, but IMO, worth it. Currently about a 10 week wait, though.

Another vote for NODAK.

Pressing your own requires several hundreds of dollars of special tooling. Then you have to weld the rails in and heat treat the holes. Its not just 'throw it in a press' and build it. Fold your owns are great if you want to make several, but for one gun, totally not worth it. (Thats assuming you can even find all the required press tools at the moment)
