I bought a cobray mac-11 9mm new a couple of months ago and it came with the most piece of crap magazines there is. Zytel mags suck i have already broke 2 of them and i only put 5 rounds in each magazine and it shattered the back of them after them 5 rounds in each were fired. so my question is if someone here can help me, i found a magazine well adapter and it is M-11 sten mag well conversion to sten mag well. the question i have is is there any drilling or modification to be made to the inside of the grip housing that the mag goes in to use these sten magazines, i have 4 sten magazines here and i want to use them but cant because they wont fit like they are now. anyone have any idea??? thanks from richard

all i know is that it is a pretty permanent modification. but the mags are plentiful for stens and cheap so go for it. i have one good mag for my FA mac and one bad one. a couple zytels too.

The Sten mag well conversion is a loser thing to do. Sell it off and just go with Pam 2 magazines from Recon Ordnance. Sten mags are hard to load, hard to set the feed lips on, and once set they don't stay there (feed lips must hold the cartridge at an 18 degree angle for best functioning.) Not to mention you NEED the sten loader to load the mag. And... the sten mag well is a lot larger front to back and just a little uncomfortable to grip.

On top of that, you have to cut the mag well on the gun right off and weld the sten magwell back on Then you need to trim and file all the excess metal that'll be sticking to your magwell area blocking the mags until you do and then hope the mags are at the correct height.

Right after the magazine ban went into effect a lot of people panicked because not a whole lot of the Zytels were available and no more could be built... but there were millions of Sten mags out there. Necessity is the mother of invention and Craig Wheatly stepped up and created the Sten gun mag conversion. We used to recomend the Sten mag well conversion before the Argentine Pam 2 mags were available. That's no longer the case. Craig doesn't even make the conversion for sale anymore.

FYI, I have owned my select fire SWD M11 9mm and M11A1 .380 since 1986 and still use the original Zytel mags as well as abt 30 more, and have yet to have a magazine break. I have heard of some early manufacture Zytels that exhibit your problem. If you can find some Danish Madsen model 1950 9mm metal mags, a simple modification to magazine, will make them very reliable with M11. I also recommend not doing the Sten modification. There are later MFG Zytel mags that work just fine. I am speaking from my own real experience with over 25,000 rounds fired. It is possible that the later MFG semi auto guns are beating up the mags or they making the most recent mags in China.
