In every agency I know of, LEOs have to qualify with their backup handgun. This gets recorded just like their normal duty weapon, make, model and SN.

I carried a 38spc as a backup to my duty gun (Glock 22) everyday. I had to qualify at the range once per year and they recorded the SN and successful qualification score.

Also, the supervisor had access to the info in a computer data base just incase I was killed. They then could determine if the bad guy got only my duty gun, or both guns from my body. I also had the SN of my guns and blood type written on the inside of my vest.

Cops do not carry a "drop piece". That would be criminal and is only something that happens in the movies. Yes, I am sure someone has done it, but it would be very hard to actually get away with it. No cop I ever knew, or currently know, would tolerate criminal behavior from another cop.
