So who else was woken up by an earthquake this morning?
I kinda got a little taste of what you Kalifornia guys have to deal with!
Bed started shaking, picture frames on the walls were bouncing around, wooden hangers were clattering like windchimes.
This one was only about 5.4R and centered about 75 miles from me, it was enough.

It took me a few seconde to realize what was going on, news says it lasted about 10 seconds, my estimate would be closer to 30 seconds. I honestly thought I could hear it before I felt it, is that possible?

I was at work giving a preshift meeting to my 0430 crew. Kinda freaked more than one out as the roof rattled and then the whole damn dock started shaking! Kinda freaky. The wife got woke up by it and called me rather concerned, but fine.

Here in upstate NY there have been two that I remember,, one back in the eighties,,, thought it was the BIG one,, living close to Plattsburg AFB. Rolled out of bed in a crouch with the 1911,, the second was in the nineties,, that one was pretty big,, thought a freight train was coming thru the house. I agree,,, its creepy when the earth moves.
You guys in CA might be used to it, but I like the earth SOLID beneath my feet!

Yep I felt it. When your house is 150 years old it creaks and rattles pretty good. Im all the way in tennessee and it woke up everyone I have talked to this morning at work.

We felt it here in SE Wisconsin too - probably over 100 miles away, but still rattled a few tables and windows. No damage that I'm aware of around here though - I don't like that kind of a wake up call!

that first on e was a 5.2 Richter quake.... The aftershock that we just felt in St. Louis was a 4.5. Pretty nifty stuff... Guess it's a good reminder to check out the 'ready bag' and 'emergency kit' stores and make sure all is up to snuff.

I'd hate to have to forage for food... I LIKE my neighbor's dog, but hey, dinner is dinner!

IIRC, last one we had was 3.5 and centered approx 15 miles away, rattled everything in the house and cats went completely nuts (howling and tearing through house) a few minutes before it hit. I woke up with 1911 in hand (wife had her's) and headed for the AR-15, realized exactly WTH was happening.

No Frank, it wasn't man-made, did happen near the place you toured, for several minutes everyone thought he was guilty. :D

This just cracks me up. As a lifelong Californian, I don't think that one was strong enough to disturb my dreams, had it happened right under me, lol!

Just kidding, guys. 5+ is a pretty decent quake, especially when you are not used to that sort of thing. And yes, Mouse, you can often hear these before you feel them. I am sure that is part of why animals know it's coming before we do. And that freight train description is pretty close, Roc Rat. I remember an after shock from the Sylmar quake in 71. We lived very close to the epicenter and I was standing just outside the kitchen. I distinctly remember seeing my sister in there, with all the cupboards swinging open and everything flying out around her. She swore she was screaming at the top of her lungs, but I couldn't hear her for the roar of the quake. I was about 11 and she was 13 at the time. It was pretty scary at that age.

I remember that one. I lived in the L.A. area at the time. Happened on a Tuesday, which was my day off from work. I had intended to sleep in late that day - but things started shaking and I looked outside and saw the power poles "waving in the wind". I've been through a lot of little quakes, and in California you learn to ignore them. But the bigger ones leave an impression. My folks lived up in the San Francisco area when the big one hit up there. Their house was on the crest of a hill overlooking Crystal Springs reservoir - which also happens to be the San Andreas fault. My father was in the City when it struck, and saw some of the serious damage happen. They now live here in Arizona too.

shake rattle and roll

Yah I felt it too here in southern IL... I think I kinda heard it before I felt it also, then I felt it and for a second my first thought was "Am I having a seizure?" then second thought was "ITS THE RUSSIANS" no not really, but I did run outside to see if there was a mushroom cloud on the horizon somewhere... then I figured out what it was... its funny, our minds are trained to react for tornados and stuff, but not earthquakes.

One thing to think about for those of us around here... this lil shake could be the activator for the New Madrid Fault which is the big boy.

That was about ALL I could think about working in St. Louis and living across the river in Illinois. I was worried that the "worst is yet to hit" kind of thing. When it hit, I had 30 minutes left in my 12 hr shift. I kept thinking, "I Hope that damn bridge is still up!!!!" the rest of the night. (I also didn't take the pedal off the floor-board until the bridge was in my rearview mirror!)

New Madrid scares me... honestly scares me! That would be akin to Kalifornication falling off the map!

yep, this just enforces my drive to keep building up supplies of ammo and food. :)

On a funny note, as I sat down on the edge of my bed to calm down and go back to sleep, my dog is staring at me from the corner of the room, I looked at him and said "arent you supposed to have a doggy sense and act funny and warn me about this stuff" he didnt have anything to say :p

If it makes you feel any better - it's more likely to take pressure off the New Madrid Fault. Pressure builds up until the plate shifts to relieve it - either in periodic small quakes or in less frequent big quakes. That doesn't mean you can't have a big one tomorrow - but it's a little less likely now that you've had this one.
