Wilmette Suspends Local Handgun Ban

2:47 pm CDT June 27, 2008

WILMETTE, Ill. -- Wilmette has suspended enforcement of its 19-year-old ordinance banning handgun possession in the wake of a US Supreme Court decision that appears to invalidate such bans.

In a 5-4 decision, the court struck down Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns, a prohibition similar to those used in several major cities, including Chicago, and a handful of suburbs including Wilmette, Evanston, Winnetka and Oak Park.

"The Law Department and the Police Department have suspended enforcement of the ordinance pending further review by the Village Board," Wilmette village attorney Time Frenzer said Thursday. "Based on the decision today, at a minimum it calls into serious question the continued viability of the ordinance."

Frenzer said questions remain about how directly the court's decision will impact local gun laws in Wilmette and other parts of the country. Washington is not a state, and each state has its own legal language governing the right to bear arms.

"That aside, the opinion will require further review and discussion by the Village Board, but it's prudent at this point to suspend enforcement of it," Frenzer said.

Wilmette's law, enacted in 1989, levied fines of up to $750 for handgun possession and allowed the village to seek a judge's order to have seized weapons destroyed.

Frenzer said he did not know exactly how many times the law has been invoked, but said its use is rare.

The last case he recalls involved a 2003 incident in which a resident, Hale DeMar, was cited after using a handgun to shoot and wound a burglar in his home. The case mobilized state gun right groups and led to the passage of a law that gave gun owners a defense to local prohibitions if the weapon was used in self-defense.

Wilmette's charges against DeMar were eventually dropped. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter declined to comment on the high court's ruling, saying he had not yet had a chance to read the decision or review it with village staff.

Thats the first i have seen anything in print , But on talk radio early this morning an ABC affiliate in Dallas was saying that the FBI had scheduled a Meeting with the Mayor of DC . The FBI wanted the meeting ,not DC .
These Cities and districts that were all mouth ,were silent for the most part today.
Hello DC does the word ,Contempt ,mean something to you ?
And this is good because if it were us they would be calling for the same thing.

I can get most of the TV stations out of Chicago. Yesterday's noon news had Daley going ballistic about the SC opinion. The guy was on a verge of a meltdown. He more or less call the 5-magority a bunch of bafoons. I laughed the "mini hiltler" didn't get his way.

It always amazed me how gun owners have been always painted as the wild eyed, mental deficients. But looking at the left in this country during the last two presidential elections, I wouldn't want any of those clowns in my nieghborhood. I do have a couple.
Since the ruling ever poll I have see supports the 2A as an individual right by 75%-80%. So my advice to the cry babies is: dig a very deep hole, throw yourself into it, and have someone cover you up.

In the blue video box in the upper right hand corner of the link, click on "hard rocker takes on supreme court." See what you think.
Ted Nugent always cuts thru the bullshit,, one of the few people that gets a chance to speak out and tell the truth. I think he would do well heading up the NRA.

A good thing!

I think these retards are now going to have to stop dumping blame on law abiding citizens and inanimate objects and focus on real measures to lower crime. To me that means it will seperate the useless turds from the useless turds who have better ideas. Not that we as gun owners havent known:p

Perhaps there will be more focus on punishing criminals, and we will move away from our "correctional" stand on crooks?????

I'm glad SCOTUS voted, even with a more narrow vote than I would have liked, the way they did. I am sad they did not back up killing child rapists though. The plus side to that is maybe when I retire I'll do the Chuck Bronson thing and take-out child rapists myself.:D

Anti-gun politicians tough on crime? Please.

In 20 yrs buisiness travels in Eastern US, I find all anti-gunners (esp politicians) are directly connected to criminals, watched my in-laws for 10 yrs and never saw one spend more than 4 hrs in jail, cases dismissed, ALL criminals and anti-gun. I've been peaching this since I joined this site, some of you have met me personally, been in my house, met my friends too.

Anti-gun = Criminals, those people don't want to be tough on crime, they ARE crime, they want to change YOU. Won't join them? They dream of taking away your ability to resist, the first thing is get your guns, if not that, then destroy/manipulate your family and make you violent, if that happens they win your guns.

That is why the Dirty Harry, Death Wish, other vigilante movies were so popular, even local LE praised them, Hollywood showed what happens when system is broken and corruption in every branch of govt, there's somebody more than willing to take care of hardened criminals.

I know my LE and detective friends, some over 20 yrs, well enough to say they wouldn't work "too hard" to solve the mystery, such as hardened criminal's early demise, and some cases (from yrs ago) still remain unsolved, we will probably never know the answers as to who did it. Having read various files, my friends agreed, the message was clear enough for all criminals who played the system, don't matter "who you know", you can be taken at any moment.

Burglars routinely killed in victim's homes, you go bezerk and kill someone, police or citizens shoot you on sight, that's SOP. I can say some (once brave) criminals have become very polite, some turned their lives around, and ALL show fear if you maintain eye contact and they THINK you're armed, they didn't do that 8 yrs ago.

The following is a memo sent to Washington, DC residents by Cathy Lanier, Washington, DC Chief of Police:

From: Lanier, Cathy (MPD)
Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2008 6:35 PM
Subject: Supreme Court Update

Residents,

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court today struck down part of the District of Columbia's handgun ban. I wanted to drop you a note to let you know the immediate impact of this decision.

The Supreme Court's ruling is limited and leaves intact various other laws that apply to private residents who would purchase handguns or other firearms for home possession. It is important that everyone know that:

a.. First, all firearms must be registered with the Metropolitan Police Department's Firearms Registration Section before they may be lawfully possessed.
a.. Second, automatic and semiautomatic handguns generally remain illegal and may not be registered.
a.. Third, the Supreme Court's ruling is limited to handguns in the home and does not entitle anyone to carry firearms outside his or her own home.

Lastly, although the Court struck the safe storage provision on the ground that it was too broadly written, in my opinion firearms in the home should be kept either unloaded and disassembled or locked.

I will comply with the Court's reading of the Second Amendment in its letter and spirit. At the same time, I will continue to vigorously enforce the District's other gun-related laws. I will also continue to find additional ways to protect the District's residents against the scourge of gun violence.

Residents who want additional information can visit the Metropolitan Police Website at www.mpdc.dc.gov/gunregistration. Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the Firearms Registration Section at 202-727-9490.

Sincerely,

Cathy Lanier

Boy i bet those folks in DC are feeling so much better now .
This manly woman is on the job ,yes sir ,you got nothing to fear now.
I bet they are sitting there saying to each other ,,I don't know what rights they are talking about ,all i know is criminals will be running in the streets killing people now.
Oh Cathy ,save us please from the end of civilization .
Only a vote for Obama now can save us from the dark ages that now are upon us.
