I'm having troubles with my 1919 (.308) feeding dummy rounds from clips and belts when I cycle the handle. It grabs the 1st round but won't extract any more from the clip or belt after that. I tried another extractor in the bolt but it made no difference. Educate me please . Thanks gordy

length of rounds?

I am currently having some feed issues as well. From what I have read from quite a few old posts is that the 1919 seems to be very particular about the length of the round. If it is on the short side, then when the extractor and bolt move forward they will can push the new round forward out of the reach of the extractor. Most of those posts recommended ammo of the proper Nato length and some people had said that they used shims behind the front spacer in order to prevent the round from being able to move forward. I am by no means an expert, but I am sure you will have other people offer up some additional insight and expertise on the subject.
Cheers

feeding, case lenght

I just mesured the cases of both Nato (us made) and the dummy case's I made up from US made civilian issue case's
Nato 2.008"
Dummy 2.020"

No difference in case but the overall lenght is different

Nato 2.793"
Dummy 2.70"

I'll have to pull the bullet's on the dummies .093" and see if that works.

Its all in the length

The original setup (blank booster & guide) for shooting blanks was for 30.06....Sarco sells them. You'll find that the front cartridge guide is quite fat, as it has to make up for the loss of the bullet length.

This is the same logic for when you are shooting live .308, 8mm, 7.62x54r, etc., they all require a specific size front cartridge stop.

As far as shooting .308 blanks, people seem to use an existing booster and weld a plug that's tapped for a drilled set screw into the end.

The .308 front cartridge is also a homemade creation, apparently the Isrealis never fired blanks. Also, the .308 blanks now available vary in length...straight neck or crimped neck. (30.06 blanks seem to be available in only one length)

Anybody got a source for these different .308 blank cartridge guides?

Sounds like you need a proper FRONT cartdridge stop. If you have more than a 1/8inch to 1/4" gap between the front of the cartridge and the FRONT stop, the belt will move forward and be too far forward for the extractor to grab a new round. Very common problem with blank adapting.

feeding

Guys I'm not shooting blanks, I had some old 308's that I pulled the bullets and fired the primers and reset the bullets so I could play with the gun and see if it fed correctly. After looking at the lenght I see that a Nato round will load with no problem, my made up dummy rounds were too short as indicated in my above post. Thanks for you input. :D

...not blanks...I'm with you now

Verify that you are using a .308 front cartridge guide, spacing of approx. 1/16'' or so works well. Just don't use a 30.06 or 8mm as they would be too loose.

The extractor works by using spring pressure from a flat spring in the top cover, check for proper tension. The extractor is fitted and pivots on the left side of the bolt...this pivot point can be a wear area making the extractor sloppy. The extractor cam (rivited on the left side plate) also needs to be inspected.

If the top cover does not lock down tight, it could also effect the feed pawl (located in the top cover) which needs to maintain a positive grip on the belt/link. The coil spring under it usually is not a problem.

One last item to look closely at is the top cover feed arm, as I recently found the short stud that rides in the groove on top of the bolt to be badly worn and causing feed problems for me.

308 feeds

Ok guys: As I now know and I'm sure that most of you do also ,only NATO rounds will properly feed with your standard cartridge guide, izzy 308 .
I took my gun out for the first test firing and it worked like a dream. I'm ready to blast and park now.:) :) :)
