The mount was made by Colt for the US Vickers. 1916 I think (I will have to check)

That is not a US Vickers Tripod. It is a Turkish Vickers Tripod.

I have an identical one in my garage right now.

Dan thanks for the info, I have been told that the base is a Colt and the top cross head was from a Turkish AA model. The cross head is marked .303 maxim and dated 1918. the base is marked Vickers Machine gun mount -manufactured by Colt patent firearms with no date. Any pic info you have would be appreciated, I have not done much research on this mount sense I picked it up a couple of years ago.

I don't know about the plate on the back leg, but...

a Colt Vickers tripod has the tripod head locking clamp in the front of the tripod base. A British tripod has the head locking clamp on the right side. The length of the legs of the Turkish tripod are longer than either the US or British ones. It is also lighter and somewhat more delicate in construction too. It is my favorite tripod to use when shooting my Vickers.

I received some more info and found out that the Turkish mounts were conversions of old British mounts supplied in 1940-41 and that most of the colt mounts went to the Brits under lend lease 1939-40. So this one has been around.
