I'm building a 7.62X54 shortie (16" barrel) basically for fire and noise. Troy over at barrelxchange suggests a two pc. booster with the end taken off. someone (I think jokingly) suggested drilling holes at a angle into the sides of the booster. What I want to do Is take my two pc. booster and open up the hole to about 3006 size and also drill four or eight angled holes in the sides of the booster. Will this get what I want? (fire and noise) and will It be enough release pressure for the gun to function properly? also Is the steel soft enough to open the hole with A die grinder and drill for the holes?
thanks.

Ammo choice

Not an answer to your question, but a suggestion. There is/was 762x54R training ammo on the market that uses a very light bullet, plastic core and copper flashed jacket that you may want to pick up. We picked up several cases at KCR. We've been shooting this in the Nagant carbines becasue it produces a great muzzle flash. O.A.L. case length is shorter that standard 762x54R so feeding may also cause problems.

Make sure to use the Military 7.62x54R that's for the (PKM) Machinegun. Those rounds are much hotter than commercial stuff, or the rounds ment for the Mosins Nagants & SVDs.

That booster that was drilled out was by the Master Window Licker himself, Double8. The holes (4 of them) are at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions and are about 1/4" in diameter. I'd probably say it's safe to do likewise and leave the hole at the business end alone.

If you were going to do something like vice it up and drill holes going forward... maybe 3 or 4 on each side and make it look like JATO boosters, it'd be fairly effective at 1/8 or maybe 3/16" holes!

The shroud, gun, booster all look the way they do cause of BA, Dave and my daughters.....not me. I hardly get any trigger time between them. We (Dave S) had the gun on fire at one time....good way to cook all the crude and grease off of it that hide in them remote places. HA
