i am selling my mountin howitzer it has originsal three foot steel 1/4 "banded wheels and three foot long barrel the barrel is sleeved with a stailess steel sleeve made to shoot beer cans filled with concreet told they go for over two miles !!
recently repainted and restored all in excelent condition had it outside for past 5 years in vermont the stock is new I had it made to original specs and U.S. gov. plan s and blueprints set of plans inclided with the gun no rust or rot stock made from two 10"square red oak beems all hand cut buy traditinal tools, chisels, and hand saws, took me about 1 year to complete the stock:D painted corect U.S. colors as per gov. specs. Amoskeeg auctions wants to sell this for me in the spring but i will offer it here first i was told that the steel banded wheels are worth over $3.000 by themselves and the 500 plus lbs. barrel about ther same comes with ram rod and mop no screw pull dont need one for beer cans,I have never fired this gun and the touch hole is currently spiked I will remove the spike plug this week. should br picked up at my home in Vermont would be real hard to ship this as total weight is over 1000 lbs. or more auctuion house told me it will bring at least $5,000 so that what I will take a new one like this currently sells for about twice that amount call me if interested 845 628 9004 I am having problems posting pics so e mail me and i will send them if intested thanks for looking

Rory,

I had a guy catching pool balls fired from my Coehorn mortar once, He used a catchers mit! I won't go into detail as I don't want to drag this mans selling thread too off topic.

Sounds like a nice set up, I wish I had the funds I'd be interested if I did! :(

Ive got a feeling it is a Hern tube.Sometimes people post this stuff then find out serious buyers know what they are looking at. A guy on GA was selling an Ord.Rifle for 16k .One it isn't a rifle ,it was a smooth bore ,two it was a Hern Barrel still in the rough from coming out of the mold. $900.00 tube ,using water pipe for a liner. South Bend or LTD would be a $3,500.00 tube. And the flash hole is drilled from the factory. All machined from hard stock ,not cast.Cheaper tubes are not drilled ,they have a dimple so you know where to drill ,But it is like if you drill it ,you are on your own.

12lb Mountain Howitzer

First off I think its a really nice artillery piece. They are a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I really appreciate seeing some pictures of your Howitzer.
But.....do you ever watch Antique Roadhouse on TV....and a Gent brings in a Colt pistol that be says he paid 3-4k for....or its someones Grandfathers weapon. The expert proceeds to explain 8-10 things that are incorrect about the weapon...and you feel bad for the owner....at least I do. But in the end they say its still a nice weapon....and probably shoots well.
I'm not an expert....but I know a bit about Vintage artillery...especially the
1828 French, 1836 U.S., and 1841 U.S. 12lb Mountain Howitzers. It is my opinion that your example (although it might have been built 40-60yrs ago) was
constructed from available parts and materials. It was to look like the 1841 version with a Prairie Carriage and I think it looks pretty neat. If anyone attempts to build one themselves....they will quickly find out how expensive and difficult a project it is.
That said....please...don't shoot the messenger. If you wish me to defend my claim and opinion I would be glad to. Strickly in the interest of historical accuracy...and not in any way to run down your fine piece. If it were original it would be worth 25-40K. If it were historically correct it might be worth
12-16K. If you build this from scratch today it would still cost you 4-6K in parts alone. 20yrs ago.... I would have been tickled to death to come accross someone selling a finished piece.
I would only fire blank shots with this, and I would subscribe to the "The
Artilleryman" magazine for safety procedures and reference.
adios
