We all revere John Moses Browning for his shear genius in weapons design and how prolific he was .

Now Gene Stoner was a modern genius in weapons design but i do wonder if he knew what a "Swiss Army Knife " he created with the AR and what it would turn into !!
The Heller decision recognizes it is the every-person`s weapon of the modern era .

It took me Decades to warm up to an aluminum weapon ,i was all about steel ,now i find my self owning more and more of them because his base design is so bloody adaptable to any caliber that will fit in the mag well !! Planned Genius or Unintended Consequences ?

What say y`all ?

The Sullivan patent for the Barrel extension is what makes the light weight, aluminum receiver possible. My understanding is that Stoner and Sullivan worked together on the designs. The beauty is that with pressures contained by the Barrel and Barrel extension, the weapons are truly modular. MSG

And there in lays the beauty of the design a true Swiss Army Knife of a weapon swap out the upper w/ guts ,maybe change the buffer, spring and you can do it any way you want !! I have seen an AR 10+ shooting .338 Lupua Mag !!
yea he worked with a team and drew from each to produce a concept in arms design with incredible modularity with the fire control and stock separate from the action two pins and it can be a very different weapon !!

Hell my competition 50 has a DPMS Kali AR 15 lower (No Mag well ) for the fire control on it and a modified JARD trigger on it !!! Helps make class weight !!

That is what started me actually Liking them .

A lot of the concept for the AR came from the Johnson.
Personal opinion.
I wouldn't say a lot. The multi-lug locking, turning bolt maybe but there were double lug bolts that turned and locked like in the Lewis gun and the multiple locking lugs can be found on the Newton rifles (albeit on a single plane as opposed to a 360 degree arc) produced in the 20's/30's.

The recoil spring in the butt can be found in the MP44 design.

I cannot think of any other Johnson operating features that are similar to the AR.

I don't believe he foresaw the adaptability of multiple calibers when it was first designed. He designed the Stoner 63 to be adaptable for different types of feed mechanisms but not different calibers.

I believe the first additional caliber that was introduced commercially for the AR was a 6mm using a necked up .223. That was back in the late 1970's. I worked for the company that introduced it.
