Local gun collector was a nose gunner on a PBY (plane in the picture). On his first patrol above islands west of Hawaii, they encounterd a 300' Jap boat (???) and took a straffing run at it. Lots of larking and chatter in the PBY until the Jap gunners shot the bottom off the plane out from under the nose gunners feet!!!! Next time they wore muiltiple flack jackets and kept their helmets strapped on.

I would guess that it limited their landing options. :eek: Its amazing what they went thru,, my Uncle was in the Tank Corps,, following Patton,,, they lost a large chunk of their belly pan out of their Tank,,, they had to be very careful where they tracked.
