Finally got a shuttle set up for my belt loader. It’s installed but not real sure how to get it started in a belt. Instructions state to place the tip of a round in the cupped area of the shuttle belt groove. Does the round push the shuttle around or just keep in in position with the tooth side on the belt? Any help is appreciated!

Shuttle Op....

Been awhile..but here goes. The feed wheels are the main parts that move the cloth belt thru the shuttle. The belt moves the shuttle wheel which puckers the belt pockets as it rotates on it's axle. As per photo's shown in post by BainMo,a small portion of the base casting must be ground down...usually with a Dremel tool...to provide movement of the shuttle wheel. The shuttle wheel must move freely. Just as with the needle set-up,the first round of ammo to be loaded should be placed into the belt so that the pusher contacts it the first rotation of the handle. The shuttle base can be adjusted to provide the correct spot for the leading edge of the shuttle wheel to pucker the pocket as the belt is pulled thru the feed base. Might take a few times to adjust the shuttle base to get the proper operation and 'sweet-spot' for the shuttle wheel to pucker the pockets at the moment the cartridge is pushed forward. WHEW...and that is from memory. I might have missed a point...but hope that helps cure your problems. Anyone else have a helpful hint...or two....?

O...forgot to mention...if you have not operated the machine with the original needle set-up,then this might also help. There is a rythem to the operation of the machine...whichever system is used. When operating the handle...starting at the 6 o'clock position...the clockwise rotation upward to about 11-12 o'clock must be a bit slower and is quicker on the downward stroke of operation. Once the rythem is established,it must be maintained to continue proper operation without missing any pockets or jamming the machine. If needed to stop operation, handle must be left in the 6 o'clock position for the next cycle.

...from the 'belt loader forum'

Not as 'putor literate as most folks,...so not sure exactly where in the belt-loader forum the photo's are found.

OK...just found the newer photo's posted by BainMo (Brian) on 10/20/08 for the installation of the shuttle assembly on the 1918 Browning belt loader. Look on the 'belt loader forum' about half way down the first page.

Thank you sir! I'll take a look-see and post a thread back here when I find it. I've been interested in the shuttle concept for a while as I HATE... nay, DESPISE the 1918 belt loader and its wicked, evil, finicky and temperamental needles.:mad::mad:

FOUND IT: https://1919a4.com/showthread.php?18057-Len-s-shuttle-assembly-pic-s

EDIT 2: So now, where is the post that he refers to of instructions that the picture numbers are tied to?

Looking to Buy a shuttle setup if possible

Hi,

New here. I have a transferrable 1919 and only use links with it in my 54R conversion. Runs great. I just picked up a transferrable 1917, and want to try with belts. I also have just picked up what looks to be an unused 1918 belt loader. I have heard about the issues with the needles. I am wondering if @L999here still has shuttle setups for sale for this machine in 30-06. I would be interested in it and any parts that are recommended to keep this thing running. I also need 100 round cloth belts for it. I need advice on the aftermarket ones sarco has or some of the green ones I have found on GB or if anybody has some that they are looking to sell etc.

Thanks

Lance

Belts are available the belt loading machine is a finneky beast. It works pretty well with the original needle set up. New belts? No. I’m working with the shuttle mod but rare and I haven’t got it working yet. Links much less trouble cloth belts much easier on the gun especially if it has a bronze trunnion

I liken the 1918 Belt Loader to the Antikythera Mechanism...without a concise detailed manual...its like the opening scene in the Stanely Kubrick film "2001" ....with the Ape beating on a rock with a large bone. In the near future after the Asteroid has hit resetting Mankind as we know it...New life forms will come across fossilized remains of Man hunched over a rust encrusted loader...and they'll wonder..."was it a computer?...was it a food processor?...was it an Astrological device for charting the stars and galaxys?...possibly a religious artifact used to summons their Gods...or Satan".???
They'll just put it on display in a crystal case and wonder with awe....."CAUSE THERE"S NO MANUAL"..!!!! :(:D

Dolf’s book “Supporting Rifle Caliber Brownings” revealed several things. The pictures of the shuttle in phases of operation shows that my shuttle groove is too shallow and the belt hold down plate needs relieving to clear the shuttle mine is binding there and the belt is pushed over when in the groove. One picture worth a thousand words? Will update when I have time to play with it.

I freaked out for a minute thinking that there was a Dolf Goldsmith book that I didn't have!!!!!

Then looked and realized that you're talking about Volume III of Dolf's series The Browning Machinegun.

WHEW!
