Anyone know anything about this ammo? It is 7.62x51 and has a headstamp with 97 at the 12 oclock position and 23 at the 6 oclock position. It also has a 3 star crimped primer.I have not been able to find anything about it. Thanks in advance

Above description is of a 2-element head stamp military cartridge,as it does not designate the caliber like most commercial ammo does. Looked briefly thru the 1989 ed. of Identification Guide,Military Small Calibre Ammunition,Rhino Publishing Co. Could not find an exact match...but most of the 2-element head stamps are from Russia, former Commie countries in Europe or China. But almost all China ammo has Chinese characters included. I would take a educated guess and surmise that this ammo may be of Russian mfg.

...forgot to add...the 23 is most likely the factory designation and the 97 was the year of production.

23 is likely Unknown Factory, Hungary, Probably now associated with Magyar Löszergyártó Kft., Mátravidéki Fémmüvek, H-332 Sirok, Hungary.. 97 may be the year of production.
