This afternoon I was back in the storage warehouse and happened to be looking at a tri-wall full of M53/MG42 ammunition cans.
As "luck" would have it the second one I opened had a "surprise" inside.

Please look at the photo's:

Can looks ordinary enough...
Architecture Wood Furniture Metal

But look inside!
Table Metal Rectangle

Does anyone know why that piece is riveted into this can?

Richard, This is a can for the belted ZB37 ammo. I have several. It allows the ammo to lay in correctly.
Will see if I can find the "factory" picture showing this and post it here for you to see.

AH!
I have a vague memory of seeing one of these before.
It was probably on a table at Knob Creek!
Thanks for sharing that info.

The downside of this is now we will have to SORT/handle all the cans and separate the ZB-37 cans from the M53/MG42 cans...

I could always use a couple more if you find enough and have any left to sell.

Any of those cans show that they could be WW2 German cans ? - please see while your sorting threw the pile ?
We have had some WWII German MG42 cans turn up in the warehouse.
They have German writing across the ends, something about being for an MG.
Of course they have been repainted, usually "apple green"
I don't think we ever sold any, unless they went on GunBroker...

I had a bunch of these cans come with 8mm ammo on belts of various makes 20+ years ago. Most were post WWII, and My understanding was the insert was put in by the Israelis for their use with the various MGs they were using. the belts were MG-34/42, ZB, and french disintegrating links. dont know if I have any of the cans left. sold or gave them away over the years. None were WWII German cans that I remember ( which is why I did not keep any)
