Here's another stupid question-buffer?

I was wondering about the importance of the buffer in the back plate? How does it work? Can it be substituded With some other creation? Where I'm going with this is I want to install spade grips by making a new back plate specifically made to attach the spade grips. Is there a big spring, or washers behind the screw? What kind of preassure am I looking at to compesate? Any help will be appreciated.

buffer disk

i made some out of nylon, and haven't had to pull any out of my fore

head yet !!!. i'll see how long it last. i just decided to try something new. they have been in there for 2 years and so far so good. thanks. tomt
