Since shots has been busy with other endeavors and doesn't get to spend too much time here anymore, I have taken over billing for the hosting of the site.

Through generous donations from a few board members Ryland Fleet and his 30-06 brass sale donation and storage man for buying it. Also and for the life of me I just can't think of the other members name (Brindisi?) the hosting has been paid for, for 7 months.

My point in doing this is to remove any stress from Shots and to make certain that this site has 100% uptime.

Apart from hosting there are other costs involved. Backups, and the actual software are not cheap either. I am trying to make this as transparent as possible for all involved and so you know how important your donations are to keeping this site afloat.

OK so now here is what I want from you guys. I want money. I want to pay for the hosting for a decent stretch out so that there is no worry for a long time. There is a built in discount for paying 6 months at a time.

"Garage Sale" some of your scraps
Let’s pay for this site well into the future.

Rory: Well, now you've got a "real life!"

Wow, big change! Thanks, and all the best to Shots. So, do we have a new site 'owner'?

And, now, thanks to you for taking on this big step. You have accepted a task that will probably take more out of you than you know. And, you'll probably have more chance to snatch the 'goodies' out from under us, too!!! ;) Everyone will surely come to appreciate your dedication to the board. We (the 'business manager' and I) have donated to Shots for the board, and through some "buys" (recently, and) in the past. The important thing is that we have continued access, and we appreciate your help.

The lapel pin of the 1919a4 donation -- someone used it as fundraiser, sits before me right now with my little re-creation of an Irish Village, some 'tin' soldier CrackerJack toys of soldiers kneeling behind 1919's, a (?) Howitzer, a thatched roof cottage, some sheep and-so-on -- some hundred dollar direct donations to keep the site up, I guess, have not been enough for recognition, but we've done what we can. With the economy the way it is and my recent health problems, we just don't have much to spare. We're counting our pennies, just like a lot of the rest of us are, (it's rice and beans next, -- seriously, not figuratively -- no gun mag renewals, etc.). We have not been able to eat or travel like we used to (eg., Brian's builds, where you and Brian and I met) but I guess we'll make it, despite.

Considering the intake from ads, etc., and how many posters there are here on a regular basis, it would be a good thing for me and others to know approximately how much it would take to keep this site running steadily, without 'gaps,' and Not just for the next 7 months! Then each of us would know, be able to take into account that 50% probably wouldn't donate at all, and judge accordingly so we can help.

Carry On!

far few than 50% donate for sure.

the hosting fees are right now steady at about 100$ a month.
we are now current and paid as i said for the next 7 months.

all the other stuff just adds on as it goes.
the ad revenue is pennies at best.

all previous contributions are very much appreciated. the ones i listed were just what put us into the current state. previous donations were used to pay for hosting, software and for the rebuild when the spammers took it down not so long ago.

we are looking forward here. i am helping to make sure that that is the constant progression.

Rory keep in mind the domain renewal thru dotster.com for this place. I paid it up thru Dec. 29, 2012... Its about 20 to 25 bucks if I remember right all together. I don't mind doing it again. Just for those that wonder what it all cost, figured I would throw that out there.

Russ,
I just totally forgot your screen name. Sorry about that.
No problem Rory, as soon as I return home (early May) I will post up a bunch of stuff in the garage sale section and we will get well into the future! Thanks for taking the time out of your life to take this on, let me know if I can help.

Donation to the site

I have 100pcs of once fired Yugo 50BMG brass headstamped IK98 I'd be willing to donate. It was all fired out my Armalite AR50 bolt gun. A fellow brother here ended up with some of this recently and I'm sure he would agree that this is nice brass. I would be willing to ship the 100pcs at my expense to a fellow brother who would be willing to make a $65.00 donation to the site. First one who agrees to make the donation and sends me their shipping information get's it.

Same thing (question) here Rory - where can I have buyers or clients send money on my behalf when they purchase some items? Be nice to just eliminate the middle man (me) and get the funds right to you or the forum slush fund.

What hosting company are you guys using?

I pay like 7$ a month and get unlimited bandwith, unlimited hosting space and a bunch of other perks through IX Web Hosting over in Hilliard.

I dont want to be naive, or sound like an advertisement - but why pay so much?

Here is a question that I have asked Shots ,without answer maybe this time will be different. How much dose it cost to operate this site a month? With this information we can better raise the needed funds. The vague comments of how high the cost is ,then how cheap some others say are confusing ...I care not how much is raised by ad sales for there ought to be a return on Shots intellectual endeavors..With this figure we could make sure that goal is met ...not some pie in the sky.

correct me if i am wrong but i believe the cost comes in with the ever growing archive file that every post ends up generating. 7 dollars a month i dont think would cover this place. hell my website i had for my lawnmower shop was 30 a month and there wasnt **** to it. the railroad website we used to have before my family sold out to another operator was 225 a month when we had it.. still with that site wasnt much to it. as it has been said you have to pay for back up storage, hosting fees, domain fees, software upgrades. all of it cost money. i have taken it upon myself to spend some clams to keep this place here. its way more healthy than crack yet it is just as addictive.....

I run a few sites, both a personal site as well as one for an organization. The organization simply was paying too much, simply because they were sticking with an ISP that gave them a "buddy" deal 15 years ago.

Is the site database larger than 10GB in size? If not, $7 a month may very well get you there...

Not all hosting plans are created equal, its a matter of understanding exactly what you need and shopping to meet those needs.
