Just recieved a colt 1928 tripod, But I can't mount my 1917a1 into it. Back fits ok but the Front pin holes are a good half inch to low. The gun pintles and the front part of the gun hits the main tripod support yoke. There seems to be ears on the side of the tripod side plates which might be pivited upwards but that would make the mount half as strong and hold the gun sloppy as hell. Is there an adapter or something I need to get or make?

I got the same thing. and the only thing that i can see is disasemble and mill the thing to fit. but who wants to start cutting a antique mount? the trunions on the original wc is about 1/8 inch shorter then the a4. some of the m35 tripods (28) will fit the a4 but some wont. best of luck Badger Bob

Solved the problem.....

Solutions still up in the air.... After taking a Lsp and rivited bottom plate, dropping in the tripod I discovered the Trunion fits up almost flush with the yoke . so all my 1919 A4s fit tight but the Blacksheep W/C Version 1 have a welded 1/4 inch tang screwed to the trunion to keep the Can from turning.

i AGREE with Badger Bob milling out the like new antique tripod is out of the question, but would be the cheapest route.

Solution #1 I'm looking into building an adapter pintle to raise the front of the gun till it clears the tripod.

Solution #2 Buy a real Colt 1928 W/C Gun to go with my 28 tripod. Anyone want to sell one?

Solution #3 Buy another 1917a1 tripod to go with my new OBS 8mm Shorty. Anyone got a cherry one 1917a1 pod?

Thinking Thinking Im going to do all three.:) It's only money, not rich, just driven....

Sounds like your 17 is a reproduction gun. I believe his new water jackets are made as exact copies of a 1917 and they will fit on the 28 tripod no problem, however the earlier ones will not fit the 28 pod. This in no way takes away from the excellent craftsmanship that went into that first batch of repro jackets.
If you are serious about buying a 1917 pod, now is the end of the best time in this century to get them. Once oow runs out, they will go up substantially in price and be difficult to find, just like the 28's did. It will not be a bad investment whether you use it or not.

The 8 tripods that OOW took to SARS Phoenix were way below my standards as were all the pieces at the show. I'll just wait for a nice one or get a hand picked on fron BMG Parts or maybe a Vickers pod.

Twisted,

Sorry about the lock tab that is a problem on the 28 tripods. When I first came up with the water jacket project I was trying to make them "User Friendly" for the home builders. I had also never seen a 28 tripod and had no way of knowing there was going to be a problem.

My 2nd jacket option with the new trunion works on the 28 pod but might not be as user friendly. It requires the jacket and reciever to be parked all as one piece and not everybody has tanks that long.

The New Jacket I'm trying to get going will be pretty much to GI spec. and fit just like the originals.

Far as I know OOW is still the best deal on the 1917A1 tripods. From what you've said sounds like they might need striped down and refinished, but at least there NOT suppost to be rewelds so they will hold there value and probibly go up in price once OOW runs out....Lou

Thanks to a friend

Solution one is in the works Will post pics of the adapter, if it's ok by the inventor.

Lou I suspect that your version 2 will work, But I have a Version 1 and a shorty version 1 being built. And when comparing the two tripods, the 1917 A1 pod is definately superior. Love your product and thanks for the help.
