...in the military, where was your least favorite post in the CONUS, and why?
What was your favorite post in the CONUS, and why?

My least favorite, I guess, was basic at Fort Dix, near the "armpit of America," because of all the cranberry bogs to slough through. It is the Army's Cook training school though, so the food was at least decent.

I guess the favorite was William Beaumont Army Medical Center for Clinical Specialist Training, 'cause we had eight hour days five days a week, single, air conditioned rooms (for enlisted!) and Mexico and several National Parks were within short drives. San Antonio was a close runner up, but I was only there for a couple months for field medic training.

Carry On!

Living in eight man tents at Camp San Onofre (sp?), situated in a gully east of Oceanside on Camp Pendleton. Rained for three solid months. Mud up to our ankles or higher. The "sunday strolls" on the firebreaks were a real joy. Lost three or four men out of our company to spinal meningitis. At least it was raining and cold instead of raining and steaming hot.

NAS Millington near Memphis. That's where this Nevada boy learned about catfish, eggs and grits for breakfast. Add Tabasco and stir. Mmmmm. ;)

Ft. Stewart, Ga. is the worse place for me, too many hilljacks, trailer trash, gnats mosquitoes and high humidity. not to mention constant deployments to third world **** holes

Favorite duty station, Ft Carson, Co. Colorado Springs whether was great, more things to do there, skiing, hiking etc.. hardly any trailer trash and hilljack

Worst place NORVA (Norfolk, VA) home of the 2nd Fleet. Best place Craney Island, VA. Almost never "went over" in Norfolk place sucked the big one in the early '60's. Craney Island, first it's not an island, second only tankers, that would be underway replenishment vessels to you non swabbie types, tied up there and some of the "Hooligan Navy" (USCG where you have to be 6'6" to enlist, that way if your ship sinks you can walk ashore).

Craney was about 5 miles as the crow flies from NORVA , actually closer to Portsmouth VA. very laid back. Could park your car just feet from the gangway. No gate guards, just some old geezer, who had a badge pinned to his T shirt, he appeared to be seriously impared most of the time, at least until the Cuban unplesantness in 1962 when the gate got Marine Guards. Down side, had to ride the liberty boat for EVERYTHING.

We were underway at least 50% of the time the Med, and hit the Carribean every spring for 6 weeks for operation "SPRINGBOARD", and a good time was had by all!

For me the "best" was Fort Lewis.Weather that I was used to,near the coast ,
decent off post entertainment and barracks.
The worst was Camp Roberts.Very little running water, and what little there was,
was laden with sulphur and other nasty tasting minerals.
I got most of my liquid consumables from the post "dry goods" store.
Craziest damn name for "liquor store" I ever heard of.The tarantulas were fun to catch and play with though.
Fort Dix was a hole also."Armpit" was a good description.Humidity and heat, then snow and ice in two days.Don't get me started on the bugs!Did I mention all the mud and sand!?Yes there was good food though.

This made me think a little and a came acrossed a funny thought. I was in the army and now I am in the air force and my worst base in the air force (altus) was the better than the best post in the army.

All CONUS stations sucked for me. What made the difference OCONUS, was a stronger sense of mission and camaraderie. That did not exist in CONUS. OCONUS was where we performed our war-time duty and live-mission. We worked what we were trained to do, that makes all the difference!
