Worse policies
About 4 years ago I moved to another county. Being a good citizens, my wife and I went to the County Clerks office to register to vote. Coincdently, we went on the same day and a half hour before we closed on the new home.
We took our certified birth cerrtificates. The person at the desk asked if we were registered in the other county, we said yes, and she asked us to surrender our voters card from the other county, we did. She then refused to register us because we were not able to prove residence in the new county. Basicly we were homeless, we had closed on the home we sold that morning, and were to complete moving into the new place after closing. Needless to say this didn't go over too well, a angry scene ensued until her supervisor intervened. I pointed out to her that I could go to the local state MV service office and register, thanks to "motor voter", WITHOUT confirming citizenship, or residence, because the employees, by policy, are forbiden to ask any question dealing with residence OR citizenship. She told me I was crazy, I asked her to call the MV office and ask them. They confirmed that they did not any citizenship or residence questions. She apoligized and registered us, asking only that we drop off a copy of the settlement papers verifing our address. Even after all this, NO ONE even glanced at out birth certificates!
End of horror story, well not quite, it gets a lot better. The COUNTY handed us temporary registration cards showing our address and and units of local government we were entilted to vote in, which included the local library district. On our way home from the closing, we stopped in at the local library to obtain a library card. The 18 airhead at the desk asked for proof of residence.
She then proceeds to refuse to accept the voters registration card, even though it clearly states that we live in and are entilted to vote in library district elections. The reason for refusal was that SHE STATED THAT SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT A VOTERS REGISTRATION CARD WAS! however, she would accept a utility bill, credit card statement, dirvers license, OR AN ADDRESS STICKER OFF OF A MAGAZINE. Another ugly scene ensued, prompted by me asking if her IQ was any higher than room temperture. Fortunatly ,for both of us, there were several persons working at the library that knew me from previous residence in the city ( it a is a very small town that I had previously lived in for 30 years.) The desk Nazi, told me, by now my wife was waiting in the car, apparently 2 scenes in one day was a little too much, that she would mail us the card, and one of the other women told her "no, you will create the cards NOW" I don't know if this was she was embarassed, or because she thought I had been treated badly, or just wanted to get rid of me. In any event, I got the cards. After damn near having a stroke.
