I got one of these -- at $29.95 the price was right. It looked like crap, with glossy black paint, pre-chipped in several places. So I removed the paint and blackened it with Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black. Now it looks pretty good (see photos). It fits well, with a rib on the base that fits snugly into the slot on the mounting plate, and it lets you mount a conventional scope in a position that is right for shooting from an M2 tripod. Anyway, this seems like a pretty good product, far as I can tell. http://www.ima-usa.com/product_info.php/products_id/984

Upside down?

When attached as shown, the raised rib on the bottom of the scope mount (side that faces the mounting plate on the gun) fits perfectly into the horizontal slot cut on the mounting plate. Also, when attached this way the scope is right at eye level when firing from the prone position with an M2 tripod.

It can also be attached upside down but in that case the rib just clears the top of the mounting plate, and the scope is higher and farther forward.

It works either way, and since it did not come with instructions I have no idea what the "right way" really is.

Belt can interfere

It looks like that the ammo belt would be in the way (blocking view through scope) once you put a belt of ammo in the gun.
It's kind of hard to see in the photo, but the scope's line of sight is a little above the feedway, so even if the belt is held horizontal it doesn't block the view. If the belt is held much above horizontal it does interfere.

Now I need to figure out what kind of scope I really want to use on this. I put a crappy bottom-of-the-line Leupold I had lying around on it for testing. I'd be interested what other people think. You could go two ways, either a high power or a red dot/Aimpoint. I'm thinking a high power would be more fun -- when blasting away close up I don't use sights anyway.

Stops came with the tripod

Is that an adjustable stop on your traverse bar? I've never seen one of those.
The tripod is an Israeli return with the desert tan paint stripped off. It's an Evans Products tripod dated 1943. The stops came with it but I don't think they are original. I guess they might be useful as a safety feature in some circumstances but I never use them.

Tapered flat top allen head capscrews

Fastenal, Inc has tapered capscrews that look great in the mount you have.

Looking at the bolts you've used for the scope mount...i bet they're flat on the bottom. The mount has tapered holes. The Fastenal capscrews have more surface contact area; and, just stick up a little from the gun's surface.

A friend of mine gave me a few...if you want I can get the part number. I'm sure they can be ordered online.

I bought one of these scope mounts from IMA recently, and hate it. Yes, the price was right but...you'd need to be a double-jointed acrobat to get any cheek weld, and even then would have to use your left eye. The rail/mount attaches solidly with regular 1/4 fine flathead socket screws, but it doesn't position the scope in a natural sighting position (needs to be higher & centered). I'd unload mine fast for $30 shipped.

My 8mm barrels are very accurate at long ranges and it deserves a scope. Tonight I begin to design & build my own.

Chuck -

Have you shot it yet, using your IMA scope mount? Mine is a nice casting, fit perfect (already had some screws) and very solid. How could I go wrong for $30?! But I couldn't crane my neck low enough to see through it with a stock. Extremely un-ergonomical. Very disapponted 'cause I wanted to see what kind of accuracy it would get out to 400-500 yrds with Yugo 8mm.

Just finished this home-built scope mount today and hope to give it a whirl tomorrow

I'll need to get some rings that clamp on top. Rail clamps against the protective housing for the open sights, and the one ring interferes when flipping up the rear sight. But it's naturally positioned.

After you try yours out, let us know if it worked well for you/ if you could see through it ok

Thanks
