Excerpts from Lee Iacocca's new book

This is a wonderful piece of writing and thinking. I wonder who he is going to vote for? I don't see any of the current candidates who would fit into this profile of a leader

Remember Lee Iacocca, the man who made the Ford Motor Company with the Mustang, and then rescued Chrysler Corporation from it's death throes? He has a new book, and here are some excerpts.

Lee Iacocca says:

"Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening?

Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder.

We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car.

But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course"

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned "Titanic". I'll give you a sound bite: "Throw all the bums out!"

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do.

And the press is waving 'pompoms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the " America " my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have. The biggest "C" is Crisis!

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory.

Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A Hell of a Mess.

So here's where we stand. We're immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving.

We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the country.

We're losing the manufacturing edge to Asia , while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble. Our borders are like sieves.

The middle class is being squeezed every which way These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you've got to ask:"Where have all the leaders gone?" Where are the curious, creative communicators?

Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo? We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina.

Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane, or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.

Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn't happen again. Now, that's just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan. Figure out what you're going to do the next time.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when "The Big Three" referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problemThe silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn't elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity.

What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show so me spine for a change?

Had Enough?

Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope I believe in America . In my lifetime I've had the privilege of living through some of America's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: the "Great Depression", "World War II", the "Korean War", the "Kennedy Assassination", the "Vietnam War", the 1970's oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11.
If I've learned one thing, it's this: "You don't get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it's building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That's the real challenge I'm raising in this book It's a call to "Action" for people who, like me, believe in America . It's not too late, but it's getting pretty close. So let' s shake off the crap and go to work. Let's tell 'em all we've had "enough."

Make a "real contribution" by sending this to everyone you know and care about--- our future is at stake!"

The nation we May save, is our own!!!   Overbore

So why the hell ain't he running for President???

I checked my 401k this morning,,, jeez I was suprised when I saw it had recovered another couple grand,, now this is after losing twenty in the last two quarters,,, I start to feel like maybe the economy is starting to sputter to life,,, maybe??? I drive to to feeling like there might be a light in the tunnel,,, then I drive by the gas station,,, $3.69 a gallon,, up almost twenty cents in the last week. This State is KILLING the economy,, The Government in general is KILLING the economy,,, very little or no highway construction coming up,,, but lots of money for low cost housing,,, money for free child health care,, money for stop smoking help,, and its all FREE!!!! EXCEPT for the people paying the bill,, ie the TAXPAYER. NYS is paying a fortune for TV commercials advertising all this FREE STUFF!!!

This friend was telling me about this,,, Gravity Challenged "lady",,, sitting in a diner bitching at the local doctor who wouldn't sign off on a state disability claim because her legs hurt,,, Too much gravity working on them,, doctor told her to lose 50 lbs and come back,,, she was all pissed off, complaining while she wolfed down a plate of chicken and dumplings along with a huge plate of fries,,,

There is a S#@t STORM COMING,,,

In November we're only going to be faced with two choices and we can only hope to be as successful as the person who wins. If they are not successful in turning things around then we won't be either. The only power we have is the power of our vote and the pen. Beyond that most Americans are not in influential positions to sway the nation or create a new hybrid car or kick Congress in the ass like Lee Iacocca is (was).

I read the excerpt and unfortunately I think it falls short. He says get outraged, but outrage without action is just smoke and his book seems to be targeting people that can make a difference and not us peons. I haven't read the book so my question is what is his detailed solutions...or does he just rant and try to get others to do likewise? Okay, there are no emerging leaders like men of history so what's the solution according to his book or are we all supposed to just get outraged? It's nice to say get outraged, but then what does the average Joe do with it besides spread it like poison and raise the blood pressure? You vote and write your Congressman or Representative on any issues in which you feel strongly and then hope and pray that enough other like-minded citizens do the same.

I like Lee and admire his accomplishments at a high level, but I think rarely has a career businessman made a good president that is astute in all the areas needed to be Pres.

I'm having a battle with my own conscience over the state of things. Before I lost my job I was squarely Republican mainly because of 2A. I remember hating the thot of Bill Clinton getting in the White House, but I gotta say that between infidelities his crew managed to recover the economy. Now I'm not sure whose the best candidate if it comes down between McCain and Obama. My self-serving side says whoever convinces me that there will be some jobs because as hard as I might try, Wells Fargo mortgage company isn't going to let me ship them a BAR or 1919 as payment and no matter how long you cook one you still can't eat it.

Ron Paul has about as much chance as Ralph Nader. I'd accuse you of throwing your vote away on him - but at this point voting for any of the top contenders is also a throw-away. Maybe we'll get lucky and the winner of the election will have a good nominee as vice president?

with this choice of candidates,,, I see the country going to hell in a handbasket, and rather see it go down with a Republican.. vote billary,,.. so the blame lays with the commicrats..

I believe that mccain is a 1 term pres just due to
his age,..

and if the others do as promised, with higher taxes, forced healthcare (billarys promised to make people forcibally pay for 3rd world health care thru the courts if you don't voluntarily join)

Wait til Americans get this garbage... and lose another 1/3 of their paychecks,

there'll be hell to pay..and if we get a commicrat as pres.. I just may become a parasite for the next 4 years just to prove their point,,

lolzz.. it may be worth it ,,

And go back to work with the next republican,, hopefully a Reagan type in 4 years,

...and I'll accuse you of throwing away the Nation by voting for someone you KNOW is wrong for the Nation.

Read my sig line. Einstein had it right. He saw first hand what happens when a bad choice gets elected. You may remember the name? Chancellor Adolf Hitler?

If people had voted properly, WWII may not have happened, and MILLIONS of people would not have been systematically slaughtered.

Go ahead.... throw away the Nation so many of us fought, bled, and died for. We did all that so you would have the right to throw it all away.

A line from a great poem comes to mind....

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Thanks to Dylan Thomas.

Simply put, it means NEVER give up.

Vote for Dr No. Vote NO to the preselected cookie cutter candidates. VOTE RON PAUL...... For the Nation.

I believe Sam Adams' popular quote may apply here.

Pat;

You gotta realise that all 3 are wrong for the nation.. there are 2 leftist lawyers and a ex pow willing to cross the isle and bargain our values and rights away regardless of what the people think, he calls that "compromise" (I don't).. the media calls him a 'wildcat" I call him anti American, since he doesn't have American Values.

In the '60's,.. he was a hero,.. now he is just another liberal dem in sheeps clothing,..

No, in the 60's he was a COLLABORATOR.

I know all 3 are pretty much the same. BAD NEWS.

That's why I posted what I did in my previous post.

I'm going to take it a step further - All 5 are wrong for the nation. Three you already described. Ralph needs no description. And sadly, Ron Paul, despite having some good points and good intentions (don't they all, to some extent?), still misses the mark on enough points that I wouldn't want him in the White House. And if he couldn't make even a third or fourth place in the primaries, you know he's not going to draw even a tenth of the votes necessary through a write-in.

Patriotpa is right about voting away the country - and we're in a hell of a fix. There are no good candidates to vote for. At least none that stand even a snowball's chance of getting elected. All I can think to do is brace for a rough ride in the next few years and work at keeping the lower-level politicians closer to the mark. The presidency is a lost cause.

But fortunately, the president can't run the whole thing by himself (or herself). Senators and Congressmen will be important players, so keep after them. (I met with my congressman personally within the past week to voice concerns on issues, and will be meeting with representatives from the offices of two congressmen during the first week in May. I urge other people to do meet with their reps, and if they can't do that - write letters.) Also, work on the local level to shape things. We can survive a bad presidency as long as we don't surrender completely.

Getting involved and communicating with people, including your representatives, will accomplish more than voting for lost causes.

I'm still not voting for any of the Three Stooges.

My vote stands.

We NEED a LEADER. Since we don't have one in any of these three, I'm not voting for them. I spent too many years in too many shitholes around the world to wreck this Nation by voting in a tyrant or a socialist or a racist wahabbist.

Hang on. We're in for a hell of a ride.

Just about everyone has made good points, but I think Old Coot made the best,, this electiion is gonna be like a chess game, with the winning move not being made in the next administration,,, but the following one.

Lobo,, you might not be able to eat a gun,, but you can keep what food and freedom you have from being taken from you if you have one.

I simply can't imagine the Shreeking Harpy realistically being ellected,,, as dumb as the sheeple are,,, I don't think they are that dumb.

McCain is a big ol question mark to me,,, he know what its like to lose your freedom,,, but he loves illegal aliens??

Obama????

TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I've pretty well written off the next administration, all 3 major candidates are libs for the most part.

I'm hoping that the republicans can gain a good strong majority in the senate or house, Then 4 years of gridlock would be a great thing. I love gridlock,.. no new taxes, laws, and watching the dems cry like spoiled babies with full diapers on..

Next month here in the Banana Republic, we have to elect a new represenative to the senate to replace Bobby Jindal, and right now the republican is a very strong favorite, so that seat is safe.

Vote your conscience and to hell with what anyone else says.

If you can sleep at night knowing you did your best to put the correct person in the Office, then you have done well, and can sleep the sleep of the just.

If, instead, you vote for the one who you think is slightly less evil, then may you have nightmares and wake up screaming for the rest of your life, for you have helped to sell out MY country as well as yours and your children's.
