Link question...

Hey guys -
I havebeen kicking around the idea of converting from using belts to links in my 1919a4 and have a question about the links. In searching around, I have seen links listed for both .308 and .30-06. Can I use .30-06 links with .308 ammo similar to what I am doing with the belts?
Any incite would be appreciated.
Thanks!

yes they will work with .308 rounds......but you can't seat them all the way in the link, a 30.06 link is smaller in diamter then the .308 round.

Thank you for the QUICK reply!!!
Just so that I understand correctly, you say that the -06 links are smaller in diameter than .308 links - I am assuming that you are referring to the small end of the link? (if that makes sense?) And it is that restriction that keeps the links from fully seating?
Sorry for the additiona questions - just trying to make sure I understand what issues I "may" have in using -06 links verse .308 links. :)
I have used the 30-06 links with no problem.
I stretch mineslightly with a tool i built to help the bullet
slide into the link easier. A little spray lube helps too.

Here is a picture of how i usually seat the .308's in the
30-06 links. This ammo is SA.

They are MUCH cheaper than the IZZY links too.
Last time i ordered them they were $10 / 1000 links.

it's the large link that is smaller.....30-06 rounds are smaller in diamter then .308 rounds....... if you fully seat the 308 round in the 30-06 link, it will be a very tight in there, and the extractor/ejector may not be able to pull out the round from the link.
Guys -
Thank you VERY much for the information and explainations! (including the picture KyAKGuy!) I think that pretty well answers any concerns I had about using the -06 links! :D
Now all I need to do is fab up a truniun protector (or find someone that has them reasonable) and I will be good to go!
Thanks again! :D
One more thing to consider...the spacing from center of link to center of link is different for 308 and 30-06 so some 308 linkers sold on this site don't work for '06 links...they bunch up.

Not to endorse one linker over another, but laminatrap's linker has dished grooves and proper pin spacing to accommodate either link...others may also, but I'm not familiar with them.
