I have a case of LC 07 762 x 51mm brass that is all sized, trimmed, polished & primed to load this holiday season. I want to load it with IMR 4895 powder as I do all my military rounds for ease of inventory holdings. According to the charts available, I can't use IMR 4895 with a 168 grain match projectile; it recommends using IMR 4064 or IMR 3031 or H335 which I have little or none of. Do I need to pay Widner's a visit or just wait till the next local funshow to come around?:(

Of course you can. M118 Match is 41.5 grains of IMR 4895 behind the 168 Sierra Match King. In fact 4895 is an excellent all around powder for both the M14 and Garand.
Go join m14tfl.com and read the many posts on reloading for the M1A (M14).

I am shooting that, and the pulled 152 gr. M2 ball projectiles with 44 grains of 4895 and getting arond 2500 fps out of it. Of course the 168 grain match kings are THE bullet for the M1A.

Cheers

My old RCBS book does not recommend the IMR4895 so I will get a new version of the book. The last time I reloaded the 168 match projectiles, I used Data 2230-c as that was all the funds would allow for at the time. It was with LC Match brass, 40 grns of powder @ 2450 FPS & I still have most of it left!

I must have been loading for the 1919a4 too long as I forgot about the M1a match loadings!
Thanks Harry,

I run 41.5 grains RE-15 behind the 175 match king, and that runs fantastic, and to my knowledge the m118lr round is the 175 match king round not the 168, however I can be mistaken on this, but my info comes from the best sources I know.

My bad, the 168 gr. load carries a different designation. Brain fart.

Anyway my point was that you can indeed load IMR4895 for this application.

Alan, I have a link somewhere to a seventeen page treatise on match loading for the M1a. I have been looking for it and will post here when I find it.

Cheers

Most, actually all of the manufacturers of propellants I have looked at have a downloadable catalog/reloading guide offered on line. These are usually updated every year.

I always check at least two indipendant sources for load information before starting any reloading.

Just to be on the safe side.

Harry,
Lots of great info there to be digested before the box of projectiles comes home from Wideners. Now maybe I can improve my shooting!

Thanks a bunch,
Alan
