Does anyone have any suggestions for stamping serial numbers into the sideplates? I have two ORF laser engraved sideplates, and the engraver just discovered his machine is not up to task. I'm up against the clock, and it appears I'll be hand stamping. Just looking for ideas, thoughts or recommendations.

The original serial numbers were stamped by hand. Just get the $10 or $12 set of 1/8" stamps from Harbor Freight and have at it. :)

I did just what Lucky#13 said do and it worked out fine. I was even able to do the stamping inside the plate, under the top cover to do the required marking ( name, city, state)& date there. Make sure you have a solid vise top, a 2 pound hammer and a steady eye/hand coordination.

I have a very flat "4" in my HF stamp set, lol!. This the result from one very hard spot on an OFR plate. But the rest of mine are holding up pretty well.

No you're not.

There's no reason to have to get them stamped before you build, unless you're stamping the inside of a plate with your name and addy.

Go ahead and build the gun, after you're finished insert your bucking bar into the reciever just behind where you're going to stamp the numbers and whack off! Errr ahhh I mean whack away! Yeah that's it whack away.

I've done it quite a few times and I use one of the el-cheapo bucking bars and it works great, just support the left sideplate so that your energy is transfered to a heavy table or anvil and you should be good to go.

If you're refering to something else, well carry on!

Thanks!

Thanks for the ideas. I stopped by Harbour Freight, and I'll give it a shot later tonight. I've seen some of the originals, I figure I can do better than that. :p
