More than likely Alex I have seen a number of tripods where they continued to use the larger bushings since they were already made but the never drilled the hole for the screw/knob assembly. They deleted the azimuth ring early in 1942 but would have used up the remaining tripod heads and pintle bushings that were already made.

Russ, i agree with that, the tripod mentioned, is not only missing a drilled hole
when i see it correctly, it,s also missing the extra uotgoing metal piece to reinforce the screw/knob assembly
as we both know, the originial one,s have the extra outgoing piece welded on the bottom side, regards john.
