This last weekend I hosted a AK47/74 build party, I bought all the AK building tools from Ak-builder.com. We were all first time builders and with the proper tooling we turned out some really nice Ak's, no one got to test fire them(being I live in the city) but all were tested out with go and no-go headspace gauges. All that attened the build party knew I had never built an AK before and we were going to try out some parkerzing.

The parking turned out very nice and dark black, just how I was hoping it would. The main problem we ran into was the media we used for blasting was to agressive. The texture was too rough in some spots. I was going to blast my 1919a4 and park it also, but we ran out time that day. I'm very glad I didn't media blast my 1919.

So the main question I have is, what is the prefered blasting media prior to parking on firearms?

Thanks,

Don

I use a 70 grit aluminum oxide. That is fairly course stuff, but it leaves a nice finish. Some prefer glass bead. What are you using now?

The stuff I'm using is called Black Blast, the only thing I see where it talks about grit, it says it has a 1.5-2.0 mil anchor profile. Also from reading on the bag it seems to be a mix of black silica and alum oxide.

I did something last night to the post parked surface that cleaned it up a lot, I sprayed the surface down with Rem Oil and went over it with some 00 steel wool. Mainly it was on the sides of the reciever that looked bad, but the rest of the gun looked good.

Seems most of you guys are using alum oxide, so maybe the stuff I using wasn't too agressive. I just might need to experiment more with the parkerizing itself.

Thanks,

Don

I parkerized my Romy G build using Radocy's Zinc solution (I've been using it for a year now on my Garand and Carbine stuff)I didn't do the barrel as it looked new and I like the contrast between the original finish on the barrel and gas tube and the receiver (NDS-3)I did my bead blasting in a professional booth (one of my buddies is a machinist and has his own shop) and I used glass beads.. it leaves a nice satin finish that looks really well parkerized.

Your link doesn't work. I am with Lucky13 and use 70 grit for most of the projects and having done a few AK's you should try the manganese park with McDermot's and acid pre-dip, they turn out jet black and are a dead on match to the original finish.
While we're waking up the dead ... Russ, what is the "acid pre-dip" you mention?

Can't find manganese park with McDermot's either. Where do you find that?

LOL I had not noticed that the thread was that old. Not sure why these guys keep dragging up ancient threads but I usually catch that.
Andrew the MacDermid acid predip is the way to go for the ultra black finish. It is easy to use and you do it right before parking for the best results. I will text you a picture of the label.
