Anyone know any info on the US Navy Mk21? That was the navys conversion of 1919's to 7.62 Nato about 1966, they were on the PBRs I was on untill 1969, they had a different barrel booster, not a flashhider but more of a sloted brake about 6" long. I was a gunnersmate and it was long ago. Would mean much to recreate a MK21. Someone else has to know the gun I am taking about!!!

Never seen one in person, but is this what you are talking about?

The only changes I see them talking about with this gun is the conversion to 7.62 Nato, a different flashhider, and also conversion to the bolt and feeding system to allow the use of M60 metal links. Other than that, seems like a standard 1919. Anyone else have knowledge on this weapon?

My ex-Brother In Law was in TF116 as a gunnersmate of a PBR in 69. He was in the parrots beak. Got some neat pictures from him. He still has his black beret, btw. He was the last American on the crew as they cycled men out and turned the boats over to Vietnamese Navy. Thanks for serving, Steve!

That was my thoughts as well, I want a flash hider like that....

The picture looks like a one piece stepped booster. I wonder if you could buy a reproduction booster and drill out the hole at the muzzle end of the booster and then tap the hole. Make a flash hider from some bar stock on the the lathe with one end threaded to fit into the booster. Have the hole on the base of the flash hider the same diameter as the original booster hole so the booster would still operate....

Two problems I see right away....

1. all the machine work would need to be precise so that all parts are alinged correctly. Otherwise a bullet striking the booster/flash hider would be a bit messy.

2. there may not be enough "meat" on the booster to get a good strong threaded connection. I can see the gas pressure stripping the threads out and launching the FH down range.

Still it is interesting...maybe use a two piece booster like on the Izzy. Then you could machine the flash hider and the booster plug as one solid piece. Simple matter of threading it on to the booster body......

Yeah, I need to see what size round stock is laying around in my shop......

Kilroy,

Take a good look at the 5.5" CAR-15 flash hiders, cut longer/larger slots, all you need is an adapter and would prefer this adapter perm attached to booster, should limit any alignment issues. Tell me what you think about it.

At first glance it reminded me of the M-60 flash hider. Which would make sense, to use a FH already in production and modify it to fit the 1919.

I am trying to find some info or better pictures. My rough guess using Photoshop to make a few measurements....

The diameter of the FH is roughly 1/2 the dia of the barrel shroud, making it roughly 15/16" dia and a length of 4.5"

Same gun alamo saddles

I am glad others have an interest in the MK21, it was just a 7.62 1919 with a special type muzzel break on it. I threw one in the water because the threads were bad and installed a new one just out of wrap, I wish I had the one in the water, we would have something to reproduce, maybe someone can find some drawings.

flashider mods

Find the right size tube and make a new slotted flashider and thread it onto a modified a6 hider it looks like you might get pretty close to looking original. If you need more thread area turn the shoulder down just in front of the main booster portion.

MK21 muzzelbrake

I live in Gulf Shores, AL. and have a good friend who work in the restoration Dept. at the Naval Aviation Museum, 15 miles away in Pensacola. They have a storage area that is jampacked with BMG 50s&30s of every flavor! Piles of parts and crates of "Even they don't know stuff". I saw it about 4 years ago, what a candy store, must have been sitting for many years. He is going to contact the curator to ask for permission to snoop, maybe if we find what we are looking for they may donate it to the site in some way.

Do you have a part # for that brake? It would help me find the prints.

Thanks,
Tom
