I just got a job at the FedEx hub as a aircraft mechanic in Memphis TN. I am moving down Dec 31st and am wondering if there is anyone down there that could find out about gun shows, gun stores, ETC. Or just get together to B.S. or build something. I am kind of looking for a cheap place to live with out living in the ghetto. What side of town should I stay away from ? I was looking at all the gun show listings in shotgun news and did not see any for Memphis, whats up with that ? Anyway hoping to meet a fellow belt feed enthusiast.

im not from TN.... but there are several members here on the site who are....

lots of us just dont put down where we're from.

havent looked it up, but John McGuire lives in TN and if he's anywhere in reasonable distance from where your going, that is a fine man to hang around, learn from and keep up to date try him as he isnt afraid for someone to say where he lives. LOL

The airport is on the south side of Memphis - for quality of life (not getting mugged on a regular basis), I recommend Southaven or Olive Branch, MS... those areas are booming from all the people running out of Memphis. All the shopping you could likely need and a couple nice gun stores w/plenty of inventory.

Downside is traffic - Goodman Road and sometimes Airways Blvd (your likely route to work) are pretty congested but well worth it IMO.

Damm and to think I was thinking of transfering with my job there... but opted to search for land someplace else on the other side of the state for R&R.

I live in the Memphis area (Lakeland). The Tennessee hometown forum on AR15.com is a good place to keep up with local gun news. There are several belt-fed owners here.

The next gun show here is Dec. 22-23 at the fairgrounds.

Mississippi is an option, but they have a state income tax and your car tags will cost over $300.

I live in northeast Shelby county. It is not too bad there. You will want to get your CCW. It is very easy to get. Tennessee has about the best gun laws in the country.

DO NOT move anywhere near the airport. Pretty much, you will want to live as far out east as you can afford. The further out, the less crime.

Welcome to Memphis. Watch your six. ;)

CK,

i wasnt gonna bring that up as i think TN is a great state and love the people that i know down there...

what Frank may not know is that for the central U.S., Memphis is actually a pretty busy hub going north and south.........therefore alot of "activity" is really developing down there. and with "activity" comes crime.

Tennessee is great, Shelby county, well not so much. Memphis has as much in common with the rest of Tennessee as Nancy Pelosi has with most of us on this board. I guess every state has that one city they wish was outside of their borders and for us Memphis is it.

I've lived in SE TN my entire life, been to Nashville dozens of times, Memphis 2 times in mid-80s. Even 20 yrs ago, you could tell (inner-city) Memphis was becoming a nightmare, you travel in groups unless you want trouble. Couldn't imagine living there now, by all means get CCW and keep a gun close by, again, watch your six.

Good point on income tax which I despise (progressive not to exceed 5% w/6k standard deduction - 12k if married before you start paying anything), but the tags will vary. This year one was $50, the other about $180 - older the auto, lower price. If you drive a new SUV it will hurt; co-worker bought a near new suburban and got dinged for $800. MS sales tax is 6% which is not great, but lower than around Memphis. One of my friends lives in Germantown, TN and likes it fine. IIRC mid July Memphis was near 70 homicides?

CC permits are also plentiful in MS, apply and wait - no permission slips needed.

Wow, I didn't really expect all this response . Thank you everyone, I will contact the ones who are near by. I am not sure if I am permanently going to stay down there. I have to put in 18 months at the hub before I can bid on a transfer back to Indy. For now the wife and kids are staying in Indy and I will fly jump seat back to Indy on the weekends. It will be tuff to leave a large log cabin house on 20 acres out in the country in Indy. I am hoping to meet some of you during my stay down there. I am bringing all my reloading stuff cause I have about 10k plus rounds to reload. ( that will take some time) I am staying temperary with another mechanic in his living room for now down in MS. ( hint -anybody got a cheap room to rent for about 18 months ?) Also has anybody ever driven too the Tulsa show or to the CMP in AL ?

You can search the real estate section for rentals: Desoto County is MS with Southaven, Olive Branch, and Horn Lake fairly reasonable commutes. Can't help you too much with different towns around Memphis/Shelby Co.

I've been to the CMP in AL, lots of guns, very friendly staff; If I remember rightly it was about a 2 1/2-3 hr drive from MEM.

Horn Lake, MS is just south of the airport and is a pretty nice town and an easy commute, about 10 miles; I stay at a motel there when I'm working in MEM.

I grew up in Memphis, definitely need a gun, it was rough in the 80's can't imagine how it would be now, Heard they just became number one for homicides in the nation, even peaked Washington DC this year. When I was a kid I got to see all kinds of good reasons why you need you own gun. throats cut, rapes, muggings (first hand not on TV) and they actually have no-go zones for cops after nightfall, they'll never admit it ,but just try and call them if you live their. My family is still in Southhaven off Tulehoma rd.
