OK guys, what do you do if your at work and the phone rings and a friend who knows nothing of guns is at an auction and says they are about to sell an army green tripod? You ask what it looks like and he says a little under waist high and heavy-how much do you want to bid? OK, that would get any of our hearts beating:D

This is what I got and no, I have no idea what it was for other than some type of transit maybe. There are no holes for mounting and no bubbles but two sets of legs. If nobody knows what this is or if it has no current value, I am going to drill a hole for mounting a 1919 on it. You kow, this has those "rare short legs for trench warfare" Really, its a very well built piece probably out of the 60's. Lots of nice casting and machining. I suppose it was Corps of Engineers and thats why its OD? Please solve my mystery. Thanks, Hotch

If you put a 1919 on that it will break! This will not hold the weight. Why did your friend say its green and heavy? I'd make him pay for it or try to re sell it or make it hold a spotter scope.

where there is a will, there is a way! I'm sure that sooner or later that you'll figure out a way to mount a weapon on that 'pod!

Gee Tommygunner, that thing weighs a lot more than a WW2 M2 tripod! If it had longer legs I would put the 1874 Cammel gun on it at the top of the balcony to greet guests, thats kinda what its like, the first pattern 74 tall pod.

Hey Rockrat, since I didn't build the pod and make the wagons I am calling that a compliment;)

Yip DaveS. it will have something on it, atleast it will be something refreshing in the gun room!

OK,,Have a blast,,you just dont have a T&E to lock the weapon in one place. You will have to drill a hole for pintal and some how put a pin in it so it will not fall out. Enjoy.:)

I have no idea what it was for
....Autonetics was a division of North American Aviation ( hense the NAA Spec number on the tripod ID plate ) and Automatic Base Line Equipt. ( ABLE ) was used to establish an asmith referrence for field artillery units. Think 1959/1960 era. The tripod probably held a miniturized automatic base line orienter.

...Do you believe in registering guns ? I DO ! Register them on the Democratic headquarters and then fire for effect. Time on target. Redlegs.....rule !:D

Thank you Dave D. But darn it, I was going to chuck the thing in the lathe and bore out the center for a bushing to put that little Mark2 British cradle I had in it. Now that it has historic value I can't play with it!:( Thanks, Hotch

...Sure you can play with it Hotch. Just get yourself a MABLE ( Miniturized automatic baseline orienter ) and rent yourself out to last-world militaries hard at work making hell holes out of disputed border areas. I see you in Darfur, maybe a few months in sunny/steamy Myanmar during the off season, then back to the horn of Africa for a rousing bombardment on Haile Selassie's Birthday.

hey hotch, too bad about the tripod but your wagon is great my buddy and I are big on history and we have a few of them along with a blacksmith shop and full woodshop from the early 19th century including a water powered 13ft woodlathe and our wifes seem to think were stuck in the past?
