I have a colt single action army revolver that needs restoration. The colt is a first generation in .44 henry rimfire cal. and very rare.

I need someone i can trust to work on it. We are all gun nuts and collectors, any recommendations for who can handle this? stan

SAA restoration

I have contacted him a few times, he seems to want to do full restoration work, i am trying to do as little change as possible from the condition it is in now, just correct a few things and keep it as original as possible.

Any other ideas ? stan

Get it authenicated!

I've collected Colt SAAs for many years. Regardless of what the blue book says you "probably" have a very valuable gun. I would send the gun to John Kopek and get it authenicated. He's the Guru when it comes to SAAs. Upon his opinion, I would then decide how "correct" the gun is. If it's all correct (and 90% of them are not) the last thing in the world I would do is any restoration work on this gun. Especially any refinishing. It would NOT enhance the value! If the gun needs mechanical work, such as trigger, hand, or bolt work on the inside mechanics then that's a different story. It is nice to have the gun "lock up" correctly and make the 4 clicks during cocking. Fred Rose in Pagosa Springs CO. is one of the people that can still do good machanical work on the SAA. Good luck on your venture.

stan I have to agree with mucker on this, doug does awesome restoration work (he lives around the corner)but having done restoration work for a number of museums myself the main thing is before anything do your homework or you may greatly depreciate the value of the piece, seek out the colt guru's and get a few opinions on this and then you can plan your attack and how it will be handled. good luck, sounds like a great piece!

A friend of mine had a Gustov Young (I think that is how its spelled) engraved Colt and it was barely worth $20,000

Generally speaking any dinking with the gun reduces value of gun and if Doug does it you will pay almost as much as it is worth to fix it. I would leave it unless it is something minor like some one ruined the screw heads taking it apart or something like that and then you just find period screws.
