There is an early Black Powder Maxim prototype in the Marine Corp museum in Quantico Va. I don't know if there are any in private hands here or abroad...
Well, it gives away your position pretty effectively, but then it pretty much obscures your position for a little while. I would guess "fire a lot... then run away". Cool videos
