I had to lube it very well and hit the latch back with a plastic mallet the first couple of times. Then kept working the latch back and forth and opening and closing the cover. Also flushing all the grit etc out doesnt hurt.

My rear sight and top cover/latch had allot of grit in them.

Shooting the gun loosens it up also.

latch

My latch is still a two handed operation try pushing down on the rear of the top cover while pulling back the latch handle.

Tight is good, even in things that are not top cover latches.

on one of the parts kits I have, I could only move that part by tapping it with a clawhammer. no ammount of pulling the tab back was going to do it.

A claw hammer will move the part - but will destroy the finish on the gun. Do as another poster above suggested and use a plastic mallet. Or - if you don't have a plastic mallet and you've just got to use that claw hammer - put a piece of wood between the hammer and the gun.

it's a used abused parts kit. the "finish" was far more destroyed than anything I could do to it with a claw hammer.

Aaron's right. When I got mine it was firmly stuck in place. I had to pound it pretty well with a rubber mallet until it popped free.

After going through that much trouble to get it off, I pulled it out and cleaned it, the mount and stuff it rides on, and lightly sanded the bottom where it overlaps the top cover. It's a lot easier now, and can be opened by squeezing the handle on the side and the back of the rear sight base with one hand.

Ditto on the A6 latch. I don't remember ever having trouble with the top cover latch in my Guard unit with the A6 guns. Another thing that could cause a problem is if one or both sides of the cover are slightly bent inward in one spot. You might want to check the sides of the cover for clearance. Just a little pressure on a side can make it difficult to open the cover.
