You can probably make your own pegboard hooks with some thick wire, a vice, vice grips and maybe a torch. Or you can buy the premade hooks that stick out very far. The hooks made to hold hammers may also work. They even make pegboard bars. You may have to go to a shop/website that specializes in store displays. Like this place

Not sure what problem your having, but I have used pegboard hooks for years to hold guns without problems. I do slide a clear soft plastic tubing over the metal to prevent scratches. Hooks come in a variety of shapes and sizes and you can rework them to suit the gun to be displayed. There are some that are meant to support heavy items useful for rifles. Also, use of self adhesive felt pads behind gun to prevent contact with the peg board helps, just stick them to the pegboard where needed. The pegboard does not have much strength so reinforcing the board with some 1X2 on the back side will keep the board from sagging if large sizes are used as well as using a frame around the outside.
