Our reserves are limited. I'd rather view them as money in the bank for when we can no longer afford to import. If we burn up our resources now (before we develop better fuel efficient cars) we will then be completely at the mercy of foreign producers and in direct competition with China. If we utilize foreign oil for now, work toward more fuel efficient cars, then when foreign oil gets REALLY expensive and only the Chinese can afford it, we will have our own supply. I fully appreciate that people don't like paying today's gas prices - but THEY WILL GET WORSE. And the competition with China will not only drive the price up, it will decrease the availability of gas. Burning up our domestic reserves is a very short-sighted fix that will leave us more vulnerable later. Better to use up the foreign stuff and diminish the quantity available to China now, and have our own to fall back on when things get bad.

I agree with the long term strat of using "thiers" before using "ours" but this issue isn't black and white. We should be able to tap into our own resources just a little more to ease the massive pain of these spiking prices. Supply and demand is so tight with petroleum these days, that even a sip off our own supply will help out right now.

My old man use to work on oil drills back in 70's, said up north, i forget where, the company he was drillin for found 2 HUGE pots of oil, the one was supposdly big enough to supply the US for 100 yrs, the other even bigger, they capped em both for reserve. Said they found the biggest one but capped it also cause i think he said it was "Green" oil??? Said it wasnt ready just yet, could have been made into gas and such but would take more work to do so. So we have lots of oil but will we tap into it...no, and if it were me i wouldnt either. Id wait till i knew there was none left anywhere in the world, then mobilize my troops in their jets, tanks, hummers and every other gas guzzlin vehicle since were the only ones that CAN and id take over the whole world. But thats just me.

Conquer Russia? Why? Vodka?

North sea brent and louisiana sweet crude produces more per bbl than that arab sour ,..

we need to give the oil co's a tax break and a fast track past environmentalists to build refineries. Our refineries are at capacity here.

But you guys don't get it ! the higher a gallon of gas is the more % of taxes we collect.
And as your Gov. we need more Taxes ,its what we do.
Oh ,and our reserves are very far from being even close to depleted , and we are not saving ours for later.
It has to do with production facility's , and refinery's.
Our friends the tree huggers and the same people who want you disarmed haven't allowed anything new to be built in 30 years ,the middle East is wall to wall production equipment and state of the art Refinery's.
Behind as we are in this ,what do we do ? ship our oil to the middle East to be refined ,then back for us to use ?
No new pipelines because the little Mexican Horny Lizard wont be able to mate because it is frightened.
Crude isn't just pumped into a tanker right out of the ground ,it has to go to a production facility to be stabilized.

The question I have is this. If we do increase our domestic production, how much do any of us expect the price at the pump to drop? I feel that the thinking is, we'll see $2 or lower gas at the pump and I'm not convincted that will happen.
Besides, the current political climate in D.C. and at the state capital's is not going to allow any amount of drilling to go on.

I am of the opposite opinion. I would prefer the price of oil to go up in the us.

That may come across as 'left wing' et cetera, but I think it would do much more for this country than trying to force down gas prices and hope things will change one day.

This may be optimistic, but imagine what gas prices equal to those in europe would do. People would aggressively cut down on their usage. Public transportation interests would go way up, helping force infrastructure growth in the areas of train and bus networks (a joke in the US) and there would be an even faster increase in interest for so-called hybrid cars.

Things like high gas prices are forcing car companies to do something NOW, rather than leisurly squander numerous future decades thinking about the idea.

You can argue that this would possibly be 'environmentally friendly', but not even factoring that into the debate, our country would be in a much more secure position and we wouldn't be dedicating so much of our revenues to the middle east and other spots we'd really prefer not to contribute $$.

Feel free to disagree/argue, but that's just how I see the situation.

Oh yes higher gas prices is just the ticket ,so instead of going to the grocery store ,and coming out with only two bags now for $200.00 ,you will only need to carry one for the same price ,but less stuff . Or how about trucking bills , a haul this time last year was $800.00 ,its now $2,500.00 , so next its $5,000.00. I always thought we were not paying enough to heat or cool our homes ,and with all the tax increases coming soon thats what i need is higher electric bills. And i live 15 miles from town ,i needed to walk that and back everyday anyhow in 100 deg .heat. And seeing how everyone is getting massive pay increases ,and just rolling in the dough ,I wish i would have thought about that . Thanks i needed that.

Dream on, Scotty,. you can't compete in the world while countries like venezuela, saudi arabia, china, india, ect subsdidizethe price of fuel for their citizens, they get it for .25-.50 cents a gallon, we have to sell our first born male child for a tank,..

I can't make a living with a inbred, 45 mpg in the city, 35 on the highway?.. gimme a break.. there's a go cart engine under the hood,.. I haveto haul a 1000+ plus in the back of the truck and tow a trailer.. besides, those inbreds look gay..

I guess a inbred is ok if you live in the big city and don't have a life. but you can't make a living with is when you have to compete worldwide. Have you seen the replacement cost of a battery in a inbred??. $$$$$$$$$$$$,.. you can buy a used SUV, and the disposal and mfg of those batteries are not very green.

And look at diesel,.. the recent hike in price is from environmentalists wanting the sulfer removed.. forget ethanol,.. it costs more to convert corn to fuel.. no savings there.. and the pulp is no longer fit to feed to the hogs, (if you are lucky, you may have some drunken pork)

I got a idea,..

"Alms for the poor!!! Beer for gas!!"

I agree,. Tom.

I live in Louisiana,. a oil rich state that supplies the US with about 40% of the nations oil,..

I wish the govs of the other oil producing states (Tx, Ok, Wy, Ak, ect) would get together and charge .25cents a gallon for each gallon of petroleum and NG product going to states that have oil and refuse to drill for it..

call it a "Ecology " tax make em scream!!!

we in these states need to maintain the ecology of the oil rich areas..

Here,.. we lostt the barrier islands that protect the coast to Katrina,, let cali , fla and the east coast pay for it, they benefit from it..

Flash you hit it on the head , Guys this is not tin foil hat crap ,the world didn't change that much in one year to warrant a 250% increase in fuel.
A world war would be one thing ,but not now .Also in Europe gas has only gone up 15% . Global Warming is a gimmick ,a fabricated reason for people control . But the NW passage opened ,OK look it up ,the NW passage was bigger and deeper in 1685 ,I'm still not convinced.
Old Coot is right ,there are places in La. oil oozes out when you step on the ground. Our Government let other country's get to much financial control over our economy ,in other words guys they are selling us out ,The world is sick of Americans living like we do ,now days off Credit they loaned the money for ,and all of these things are lining up at just about the time a liberal commie is going to be the President Hummmm. Our standard of living has to come down in order for the ones we owe money to ,to go up.
Incorporating Mexico into our society is the trick ,Americans will work ,and they will work for less or the Mexicans will.
The Constitution is the thing that our founding fathers set in place in order to allow us to be top dogs , Remove any of the first three Amendments and the rest will fall . The 2nd being the target ,watch , random nut case shootings will happen right before or after the SCOTUS decision.
Why do you think they do nothing about the Border ? why do people who are not even citizens get free medical care ? you know why ,it isn't Rocket Science.
These three jack asses didn't happen by accident ,they all came from the Senate ,and what ever is behind all of this doesn't care which one wins ,they stacked the deck in their favor this time. Someone big is calling the shots on this gas thing ,and it is having the desired effect .The border ,economy ,election, all of it is coming off as to well orchestrated for it to be happening by Chance. And a lot of other people agree ,Stocks ,Banking,Constitutional Scholars.

The Mid-East is running out.

China NEEDS gas to keep its economy going.

The U.S. is sitting on an ocean of oil, I am quite literally!:p

Our ocean of oil is in a place where 25% + of the population is made up of vets and nearly the rest are Active/Guard/Reserve. Not that anyone can invade us without HUGE gas reserves.

So we lessen our dependence on the imported crap, we re-adjust our lives and live more like our great grand-parents, when Abdullah runs out we crack open the reserves and presto! The New American Century is here.

Dont sweat it, the people that have always been in charge of your lives have their/your best intrests in mind. They dont want an armed rebellion, and we all come from the sort of stock that enjoys a good revolution, thats how we became Americans.
